National and State Success for Northland Christian Debate

National and State Success for Northland Christian Debate

Northland Christian Debaters are wrapping up their regular season with great results in the city, state, and across the nation! This year the team has traveled to Dallas, Austin, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Durham, and Berkeley to compete at national competitions attracting the top competitors in the country. After four days in California, debaters came back to Houston with a lot of hardware! Congratulations to Harmony Moore for placing 6th in Congressional Debate; with this result, Harmony has earned three bids to the elite Tournament of Champions. She will represent NCS in Kentucky with some of the top debaters from all over the country. Carolina Crespo also advanced to semi-finals in Congressional Debate. In Lincoln Douglas Debate, Jake McCathran and Anderson Hendrix advanced to triple-octofinals. In World Schools, both of our teams advanced to elimination rounds. NCS Gold (comprised of Aiden Buchanan, Tucker Bayer, Alicia Martinez and Margo Meaney) advanced to the top 16; NCS Red (comprised of Makena Elswick, Jackson Lawrence, Jackson Leard, and Kate VanWormer) advanced to the top 8!

The Berkeley tournament marks the end of the regular season for debaters. Later this week students will compete at NSDA Districts, which is their chance to qualify for the National Tournament taking place in Des Moines this summer. On March 7th, debaters will compete at the Texas Forensic Association’s State Tournament. In order to qualify for this tournament, students had to earn ten state points at tournaments during the regular season. TFA State is considered the state championship for all schools that actively compete in debate, and it is considered one of the toughest state tournaments in the country. This year, Northland had 16 students qualify in 18 events; with these qualifications, Northland Christian has the fourth most qualifications out of all private schools in the state!
