Northland Debaters Compete for National Championship (again!)

The Northland Debate Team has had a fantastic showing at NSDA Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (the largest academic competition in the nation). For the fourth time in program history, we have students competing for a National Championship!

Kaitlyn England (rising senior) and Elyse Dewbre (rising junior) are members of the East Texas District Team with two students from Kingwood High School (Leila Saklou and Emily Grantham) and one student from The Woodlands High School (Shreya Joshi). As a team, the girls made it to the final round for the second year in a row. At 12 p.m. central time, you can watch a live stream of the event where you will see the talents of this fantastic team as they debate Team China! In order to make it to the final round, they qualified for the tournament, won all six preliminary rounds and won five elimination rounds.

Northland has attended Nationals 12 years in a row; this year we had four qualifiers! In addition to Kaitlyn and Elyse, Athena Sarghos qualified in International Extemporaneous Speaking and Nathan Brown qualified in Humorous Interpretation. They were joined by the best speakers and debaters in the country to compete this week.

You can watch the full round ( at 12:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. Eastern time) as the team competes; on Friday evening you can also watch the awards ceremony where the girls will be honored on stage. We hope you will cheer us on from Houston!
