It's been an amazing week in Birmingham!

The East Texas Worlds team got 2nd in the NATION! Out of 173 teams, this team debated 11 different topics, won 10 rounds in a row and got to debate on the final stage in a close 5-4 decision. So proud of this team composed of wonderful, fierce women!

Congratulations to Margaret, Kaitlyn, Colette, Leila and Emily -- Coach Audra and I are SO PROUD of you!

We also had an extemper, Sarah, in the top 30 of IX; she was also recognized on the stage for being a member of Team USA. Alexa was a semi-finalist in Congress, and Max was NCS' first national qualifier in Humorous Interp.

Thanks for an amazing season, NCS Debate! It was phenomenal!

[6/23/17] The Northland Debate Team has had a fantastic showing at NSDA Nationals in Birmingham, Alabama (the largest academic competition in the nation). For the third time in program history, we have students competing for a National Championship!! Margaret Purcell (graduated senior) and Kaitlyn England (rising junior) were members of the East Texas District Team with three students from Kingwood High School (Colette Faulkner, Leila Saklou and Emily Grantham). As a team, the girls made it to the final round as two of the top teams in the nation, debating students from New York City. This evening, we will find out the result of that round.

Northland has attended Nationals 11 years in a row; this year we had five qualifiers! In addition to Margaret and Kaitlyn, Sarah Lanier qualified for the third year in a row for International Extemp, making it to the top 30 in the entire nation!  Alexa Anastos qualified for Student Congress and made it to the semi-final round, and Max Gay was the first school qualifier in Humorous Interpretation. Pictured from left: Sarah Lanier, Margaret Purcell, Kaitlyn England, Alexa Anastos, and Max Gay.

This evening you can watch the live awards ceremony (www.speechanddebate.org/live) at 6:30 as Kaitlyn and Margaret are honored on stage; Sarah Lanier will also be honored for her time on the USA World Debate Team and will be getting a special award. We hope you will cheer us on from Houston!
