Vocal Music

Choir I, II - High School
1 Credit ~ 2 Semesters
Students enrolled in Choir will express themselves musically while developing healthy vocal technique through daily group vocal instruction. Choir students will perform music in several different languages and many different styles as they build music reading skills. Due to travel requirements for competitions and performances, students should be in good academic standing. Uniform purchase required. 

Choir Honors III, IV - High School
1 Credit ~ 2 Semesters
Honors level Choir credit is available for students who are participating in High School Choir for a third or fourth year. Honors level students are expected to serve as leaders and mentors to other students while advancing their own skills to a higher level. 

Performance Workshop I, II - High School
.5 Credit ~ 2 Semesters
Prerequisite and Limitations: Audition required. Concurrent enrollment in High School Choir required. 
Performance Workshop (also known as “Select 16”) is Northland’s premiere vocal ensemble. The group selected will perform a broad spectrum of musical styles. Students will also benefit from group and individual voice instruction. Students enrolled in this class will participate in TPSMEA All-State Choir auditions and Solo & Ensemble competition. Due to travel requirements for competitions and performances, students should be in good academic standing. Uniform purchase required.

The Treble Choir is an elite ensemble of girls who will perform challenging 3 and 4 part choral literature. The ensemble will perform music in several different languages and many different styles. Students enrolled in this class will participate in TPSMEA All-State Choir auditions and Solo & Ensemble competition. Due to travel requirements for competitions and performances, students should be in good academic standing. Uniform purchase required.

Treble Choir Honors III, IV - High School (Girls)
5 Credit ~ 2 Semesters
Prerequisite and Limitations: Audition required. Treble Choir I and II, concurrent enrollment in High School Choir required. 
The Treble Choir is an elite ensemble of girls who will perform challenging 3 and 4 part choral literature. The ensemble will perform music in several different languages and many different styles. Music Survey - High School
.5 Credit ~ 1 Semester (Fall Semester)
Explore the elements that contribute to all genres of music, then board the ‘music time machine’ to travel back through the ages and investigate the sounds emanating from the Medieval Cloister through the Renaissance. Emphasis is on listening to music from the various periods and participating in group discussions. The first semester of Music Survey is suggested prior to enrolling in the second semester. Offered every other year. Next offering will be in the 2016-2017 school year.

Music Survey - High School
.5 Credit ~ 1 Semester (Spring Semester)
Students will board the ‘music time machine’ to travel back in time to investigate music from Bach to Rock. Study will begin in the Baroque period and continue to music of the present day. Emphasis is on listening to music from the various periods and participating in group discussions. The first semester of Music Survey is suggested prior to enrolling in this semester. Offered every other year. Next offering will be in the 2016-2017 school year.

Music Theory & Composition I
1 Credit ~ 2 Semesters
This course is for the serious music student who is considering majoring in music in college or is highly motivated to compose. This class will cover music composition, analysis, melodic and harmonic dictation and basic keyboard skills. Students enrolled in this class will have Finale, Auralia and other specialized software programs loaded on their laptops to complement the text and workbook for the class. Offered every other year. Next offering will be in the 2017-2018 school year.

Music Theory & Composition II - Honors
1 Credit ~ 2 Semesters
Prerequisite and Limitations: Music Theory & Composition I or permission from the teacher.  
A continuation and extension of Music Theory I which offers students the opportunity for deeper exploration of music concept and composition. Offered every other year. Next offering will be in the 2017-2018 school year.
