2010 Summer Programs

Summer programs are offered at most Universities. Listed below is a sampling of various summer camps that are offered. If you have an area of interest or an interest in a particular university, please visit the university website for additional camps that may be offered. Summer camps are a great enrichment opportunity and can be helpful in obtaining an acceptance to a university.

Summer Creative Writing Workshops for Young People – Students engage in writing stories, poetry, nonfiction and plays. Workshops are available for students Kindergarten through 12th grade. For more information email kcapo@rice.edu.

Rice for High School students - Through this program, rising juniors and seniors (classes of 2011 and 2012) can take one course in Rice University’s regular summer school alongside current college students from Rice and visiting students from other institutions. The application deadline is March 26.

Shepherd School of Music – The School of Music offers several different camps including piano, music day camps, and summer vocal camps. Please contact the Shepherd School of Music for more information.

The Talented and Gifted Program ( July 11 – 30) offers students who have completed the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade a three week college-credit and noncredit courses to stretch thinking and learning. Please visit www.smu.edu/tag for more information.

The SMU College Experience ( June 30 – August 4) is a five-week experience that offers students an opportunity to earn six hours of college credit while living on campus with peers. The College Experience is designed for students who have completed the 10th or 11th grades. Please visit www.smu.edu/ce for more information.

Texas A&M University – College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

Texas A&M University – College of Architecture
Application Deadline: May 15, 2010

Camp Arch is an exclusive week-long interdisciplinary experience designed to acquaint students with the study of and potential careers in professions utilizing architecture, visualization, construction science, landscape architecture, and urban planning. Camp date is July 11-17, 2010.

The University of Houston offers various summer camps at various locations throughout the Houston area. Listed below are a few of the summer camps available.

By Design – An Introduction to Architecture, including design studio work, lectures and field trips.
3D Animation – Develop the skills to make your own 3D models, animations and movies.
3D Game Creation - Design and build 3D games with GameCore.
Digital Filmmaking for Teens – Course includes technical fundamentals of shooting and editing digital video while introducing you to the concepts of cinematic form and structure.
How Does It Work? - Take an in depth look at simple machines to complex robotics, and learn how actual inventions are created.
Texas Music Festival Jazz Institute - Improvisation, jazz theory, big band, sectionals and public performances.

RTF Summer Media Camps - The Department of Radio-Television-Film offers summer media camps in filmmaking for 7th through 12th graders. The intensive workshop-structure gives students the opportunity to focus on various aspects of the filmmaking process including screenwriting, production and editing. Camps are week-long and run June 21 – July 30. Registration opens soon.

Summer Academy in Architecture – June 7 – July 9, 2010. The Summer Academy is an intensive introductory course in architecture that assumes no prior study in the field. Through a series of individual studio design projects, the Academy introduces students to many of the important aspects of architecture. For more information email academy@austin.utexas.edu.

Future Leader Camp / Drill Camp – This program focuses on individual and team skill development. It is open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Please contact Norwich University for more information.

National Institute of American History and Democracy (NIAHD) Pre-Collegiate Summer Program is offered to juniors, rising seniors and graduating seniors. This is an outstanding academic program in which students earn four hours of college credit. Two three-week courses are offered: Jamestown through the American Revolution and/or American Revolution through the Civil War. The course dates for 2010 are: June 27 – July 17 and July 18 – August 7, 2010.

The Capstone Business Academy is a 10-day residential summer program designed for rising high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in business. The program includes trips throughout the region to visit Fortune 500 companies, learning secrets to success for global entrepreneurs, interviews with Wall Street Stock Brokers, FBI Special Agents and much more. Two ten-day sessions are offered: June 14-23 and July 12-21, 2010.
