Important Elementary Information                                                            (email Thurs 9/6/07)
This week has been such a huge blessing. To see so many of you up at the school for the grade level parent meetings has been a great source of encouragement. I had the opportunity to sit in on each grade level meeting. Each meeting just confirmed even more what I already knew; we have an incredible team of teachers and some of the most supportive parents that I have ever been around. I also walked away from each meeting realizing again how many wonderful things we have going on at Northland Christian Elementary School. So much of the wonderful things happening are only made possible by the high level of parent involvement, especially through our PTO. If you have not yet joined our PTO, I want to encourage you to do so. Besides sending your child to Northland, it is the next best way to support our faculty, staff, and each of our students.

Attached you will find a list of elementary events for the year. I hope this is helpful as you organize your year. Please let us know if you have any questions. Have a blessed day.

In Christ, Kent Hart
Elementary Principal

FOR EVERYONE WHO MISSED THE HEART SCREENING DAY HERE AT NCS HIGH SCHOOL!!
(email 9/4/07)
Northland is hosting a special event at our high school campus on September 22nd from 9:00 a.m. - noon. A company called SportsFit USA will be here for and additional testing day to conduct comprehensive HEART SCREENINGS (Echocardiograms/Echo-Doppler) for our young athletes, and anyone who wants to take advantage of this screening tool. This is being done for the prevention of what most of us have seen in recent times either on the news, in a paper, or from those who have had personal experience with this issue. In the U.S. alone, it is reported that around 435 young athletes die EACH MONTH due to undiagnosed, undetected heart abnormalities while participating in sporting activities. These heart issues follow no genetic predisposition, nor are they more prevalent in certain ethnicities. Unfortunately in more than 90% of these cases, the first visible sign of a problem is death. Last year alone, Houston lost 13 of its young athletes during a sporting activity due to Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome (SUDS) associated with undiagnosed heart defects. This test detects approximately 99% of all structural heart defects and costs about as much as a pair of Nike tennis shoes.

Although the heart screening is not a mandatory screening, it is one that is being closely scrutinized by Texas legislation and may be mandatory in the near future. On December 10, 2004, the International Olympic Committee adopted the Lausanne Recommendations and is now mandating screening for all its athletes. They also issued an advisory worldwide recommending that all athletes be tested. The If you have any specific questions or want to know more about this topic, please feel free to browse their website at www.sportsfitusa.net.

REGISTRATION!!!!

There are several ways to register for the heart screening if you choose to participate. First, you can log on to their website and use their online registration page. PLEASE SELECT NORTHLAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL FROM THE DROP DOWN MENU WHEN CHOOSING THE TESTING SITE. You can also download a registration form from their site and simply fax it to 832-202-2514. PLEASE WRITE IN NORTHLAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IN SPACE THAT ASKS FOR TESTING LOCATION. You can also choose to call their main number at 281-570-9992. Which ever way you choose, a SportFit staff member will contact you within 24 hours to confirm and schedule your screenings. Payments for the heart screenings can be made through their website using PayPal, or you can bring a check or cash with you on the date of testing. Heart screenings take around 15 minutes and are $150 for the first child, and $125 thereafter for siblings, parents, and immediate family. The normal co-pay for this type of procedure if done in a clinic or hospital is normally $180 and above. Once again, please call or email us with any questions and don't forget that times for testing are on a first-come, first-served basis! A copy of the registration form is attached to this message. You are also welcome to invite friends and family who may also be interested in screening their loved ones by simply forwarding this message to them.
