Spring Announcements

Northland Christian School will be hosting SportsFit USA on Saturday May 24
and June 21, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. They will offer physicals and heart screening to our student body. A physical is a REQUIREMENT if your child wishes to participate in school sponsored sports and related programs. This year, we will again be including voluntary ECHOCARDIOGRAM HEART SCREENINGS for anyone who is interested in screening their children or themselves. SportsFit USA (www.sportsfitusa.net) will provide both the mandatory physicals as well as the heart screenings. YOU MUST REGISTER with SportsFit USA in order to obtain a time-slot for the physical, and one for the heart screening if you choose to participate.

Physicals are $30.00 per child. Echocardiogram heart screenings are $150.00 for the first individual and $125.00 thereafter for any immediate family members who wish to participate. They will see anyone from ages 8 and up. Physicals take about 5-10 minutes while the echocardiogram takes around 15 minutes. The heart screening exam is comprised of an Echocardiogram with Dopplar, a color blood-flow mapping analysis, and a 3-lead Electrocardiogram. Tests are performed by licensed sonographers and interpreted by board certified Cardiologists.

REGISTRATION!!!
To register, log onto www.sportsfitusa.net and use their registration page (registration button is red and located at upper left of homepage) and fill in appropriate information.  A SportsFit representative will contact you at the number you give them to set up a specific time for your screenings. You can also choose to call them at (281)570-9992 to schedule your appointment as well. If you have specific questions about the heart screenings, please send them an email at info@sportsfitusa.net.

Friday, April 25th is Field Day. The events start at 9:00. There will be inside and outside events. We recommend that you apply sun screen before school. Nurse Tackett will hand out sun screen towelettes to re-apply in the afternoon. It is OK to send a hat with your child if he/she wishes to wear one. NCS high school students will assist with the events but we would love to have you come and watch the fun. Each child will receive an Icee Pop in the morning and one in the afternoon. Lunch for all grades will be at noon. The cafeteria will sell a brown bag lunch, or you may send a sack lunch with your student.

If you have an interest in purchasing a yearbook from last school year(2006/2007) I still have a few left. They are first come first serve for $10.00 each. What a great gift to send Grandma! Come by the Welcome Center if you would like one.

NCS service hours opportunity
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY  greater Houston will be better prepared thanks to a disaster drill being held at the George R. Brown Convention Center on April 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This exercise will help emergency management staff fine-tune their procedures should a hurricane threaten the Houston area this year. Lots of volunteers will be needed to make this drill realistic, with the largest number playing the role of would-be evacuees. Individual volunteers should be at least age 15, but families with younger children are also invited to participate.

Harris County Citizen Corps
3033 Chimney Rock, # 460 (77056)

Harris County Citizen Corps is the local component of a national ongoing initiative spawned by the events of September 11, 2001. Among its services, it oversees CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams) and the Medical Reserve Corps.

About 300 volunteers are needed to assist with our local evacuation exercise on Tuesday April 29, 2008 from 5:30pm until 8:30pm. It will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center Hall A. Free lighted parking will be available in a designated area TBD. Dress casual and please wear comfortable shoes for walking. Bring drinking water and a snack if needed.

The vast majority of the volunteers will serve as mock disaster evacuees, but other volunteers will also be needed to be involved in the process of greeting, screening, and registering the evacuees, as well as to help them board evacuation buses.

If you are interested in volunteering for this exercise, please call Grace Jackson at 713-964-0211 or e-mail gracej@volunteerhouston.org.
Or
To register on-line, please go to www.volunteerhouston.org and under "Menu" click on the red link marked "VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES" on the left-hand side of the page, then click on the calendar and go to April 29. Click on the "Mock Evacuation Drill" volunteer assignment you are interested in. (In order to sign up for this project you will need to register and log in to the system.)

Congratulations to the Northland Christian High School Choir on their outstanding results at the Texas Private Music Educators Association State Concert and Sight Reading Contest last week. Each choir must prepare 3 pieces of music demonstrating contrasting styles and time periods and sing them before the judging panel and an audience of choirs from competing schools. Next they enter another room where they must sing a piece of music in 4 part harmony with piano then without all before a panel of judges including several to the top college directors in the state. Each judge gives comments about the performance and a rating with superior being the highest possible score. Northland High School Choir received a rating of superior from all 6 judges in the Concert and Sight Reading portions of the competition. Congratulations NCS singers.

From the Elementary Principal:
It is hard to believe that we are quickly approaching the end of our 3rd quarter. It has been such a great year and we look forward to a wonderful final 9 weeks. Thank you again for your prayers, support, and encouragement. I wanted to take a moment to communicate a couple of items of importance.

•   Thank you for supporting, on a monthly basis the two children that your child's class is sponsoring for Compassion International. Thank you for your continued support by giving at least $3 per month to this incredible cause. We are now beginning to receive letters from the 10 children our elementary school is sponsoring. It will bring tears to your eyes reading some of the thoughts expressed by these needing children. We send Compassion $320 each month to keep all 10 children in the program.

•   Enrollment continues to go well. We are close to beginning waiting lists for a number of our grade levels. If you have friends that have been considering Northland or know of others that you want to introduce to Northland, please encourage them to contact Debbie Wilkins as soon as possible.

•   We have been encouraging our students to help us keep our campus safe and secure by not opening up exterior doors during the day to anybody. Please help us in this effort by only entering and exiting the building at the main entrance on the east side. In an effort to keep each child safe, I wanted to remind all parents to only drop off or pick up kids through our car-pool system or by escorting them into and out of the building. We have also added a portable stop sign on the west side car-pool road, right before the second awning. Please stop at that sign before proceeding under the awning. Thank you for your help in keeping our kids safe.
