Save the Date for Northland's
Black and Gold Gala
By Buddy Ellisor, Head of School

These are exciting days at NCS. School is off to a strong start. We had a great Fall Festival and Homecoming. Now it is time to start thinking about the future.

Mark your calendars for a really big event, our Black and Gold Gala to be held at the Woodlands Marriott on March 6, 2010. This year our theme is “Under Construction” as we go about raising funds for some really exciting projects.

Here’s a sneak preview of what is in store for the future:
Imagine a science building on our Secondary Campus completely transformed into a student learning center complete with full laboratories for all the sciences plus our first robotics laboratory. The labs will be equipped with the very latest in technology. A solar powered heating unit with roof-mounted solar panels provides hot water within minutes. In the central vestibule sits a huge salt water aquarium, small animal housing and multiple displays and murals illustrating God’s creation.

This is just a part of our exciting future and you can be a part of it. Stay tuned for more details…

Biography Bottle Project - an NCS tradition!
The fourth grade class continues an NCS tradition each fall by creating a biography bottle. Students chose a famous figure, read a book about that person, then plan a presentation for their class. They present their "Bottle Personalities" along with a narrative of accomplishments and personal information.

Elementary School Christian Leadership Council Club

“No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.  Unknown”

The elementary Christian Leadership Council (TGIFriday club) organized a used clothing drive the last week of October. Homerooms were competing to win a free uniform day, so families dug deep into their closets and sent bags of items to share with Houston area residents who aren't as blessed.

In all, OVER 3,647 ITEMS were collected!!! After the sorting is completed, the items will be distributed to several different area charities and shelters. Thank you to all the Northland students and families who helped make this event a larger success than ever expected. Once again, your actions show your hearts...and God's love for others around you. Bless you all!

Thoughts from the Dean of Academics - David Nelson
ARC Meetings at Secondary Campus
In order to connect as a community and recommit to the school’s pillars of culture (Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Scholarship, Excellence, and Discipline), Northland Christian School has daily ARC meetings. ARC stands for Announcements, Recognition, and Community. The entire school community — students, faculty, staff, and administrators — gather in the gym while both students and faculty step forward to make announcements and recognize achievements. From time to time, students and faculty members who have violated any of the school’s values will apologize to the entire community, and the whole student body then determines whether that student or faculty member can be readmitted to the community. Students thus play an active role in maintaining the school’s values, making them more invested in the school’s success. All ARC meetings end with students and faculty members taking a few minutes to fellowship before the day begins producing a very positive beginning to every day.

From the Elementary School Principal - Kent Hart

It has been an incredible beginning to a school year that will be full of many exciting experiences, developments, and discoveries. Our theme this year is, "With Everything". One of the areas that we will experience, develop, and discover more about is how much Jesus loves us and how we are to love Him with everything we are, especially through loving each other. We believe this is the highest attribute that we could have as a Christian school. This characteristic lays a strong foundation for all other things to be built.
We want to say again to our new families, welcome and thank you for choosing Northland and investing your most precious possession with us, your child. We look forward to a great year. We hope you have experienced a positive start. Please let us know if we can help you in any way.

Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support. Blessings in Christ!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the Preschool Director - Rachel Partin

Dear Preschool Families:
The school year is quickly rolling along and the children are engaged in many activities.  Northland is blessed to have wonderful families who want a Christian education for their children.  Thank you for your continued support.

We look forward to successful year with your children.

NCS Debate Team News

Welcome Perry Beard
The NCS Debate Team welcomes Perry Beard! Perry has joined NCS as a full-time faculty member teaching High School & Middle School Debate and Speech classes. He has also joined the coaching staff of the Debate Team where his focus will be on coaching the Varsity Lincoln Douglas debaters.

NCS Debate Team Makes History at the National Forensic League National Debate and Speech Tournament
The following NCS Debate Team members qualified for the prestigious National Forensic League National Debate Tournament which was held this past June in Birmingham, Alabama: Josh Roberts-Lincoln Douglas Debate; Jonathan Crews and James Cossey-Public Forum Debate; Jared Woods and Cassie Robinson-Public Forum Debate; Katie James and Emma Wilhelm-United States Extemporaneous Speaking; Alex Heim-Congressional Debate.

These team members success at the national debate tournament set some new personal team records. Out of over 1,000 schools competing at the National Tournament Northland Christian School was awarded the National Forensic League School of Excellence in Debate Award. Only 16 schools in the nation received this award, which puts NCS in the top 2% of all public and private schools in the nation.

NCS team members also had great individual success. Jonathan Crews and James Cossey finished 13th in the nation in Public Forum Debate. Jared Woods and Cassie Robinson finished in the top 30 in Public Forum Debate. Katie James finished as a quarterfinalist in United States Extemporaneous Speaking. Alex Heim was a Semi-Finalist in Congressional Debate.

PTO is off to an exciting start in 2009. Prior to the school year beginning, the group worked to contact all of our new Northland families. At the secondary campus, we hosted new student ice cream socials on locker check-in day. While at the elementary campus, parents attended a Boo-Hoo/Ya-Hoo Brunch on the first day (PTO reps pictured at right).

Both campuses are currently participating in Membership Drives, while each set of grade level reps are hosting a grade-wide gathering. Please register online to become a member and help support countless programs that directly support our wonderful staff and outstanding students.

Fall Fundraisers include an Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Sale, beginning on September 15th at the secondary campus. This year we are excited to announce the return of the favorite Northland tradition of having cookie bakers and sellers on campus twice a week. At the elementary campus, PTO will be selling Great American giftwrap and continuing the popular Scrips Program.

Plans are underway for the Homecoming festivities and dance with the PTO coordinating the students’ involvement in the dance decorations, music selection, set-up, and clean-up.

Please feel free to contact any board member listed on either website with questions, suggestions, or interest in volunteering. We have many future events, and the Northland PTO would love to get you involved.

Athletics at the Secondary Campus

Check our website to see our sports teams schedules, rosters and early results.

IMPACT protects again
Last year Northland took steps to make the IMPACT Concussion Test mandatory for all students wishing to be in athletics.

Before the school year began, athletic hopefuls were required to take the concussion test to provide a baseline in the case of future injury. Within 24-48 hours after an injury to the head occurs, the athlete takes the first in a series concussion test to determine the severity of the injury, these results are sent immediately to Dr. Scott Rand at Lone Star Sports Medicine Clinic. He compares the baseline test against the post injury test to determine the severity of the injury.

Once the student has been seen by a physician, Coach Stewart continues to give follow-up test at weekly intervals and sends the results to the doctor. A decision about how quickly a student can reenter athletics is then based on facts, and not just how a student feels.

The IMPACT concussion tests are continuing to be an asset as another year of sports is underway. During our first high school football game of the season, one of our star athletes suffered a minor concussion. The emergency clinic referred the family to Dr. Scott Rand. The IMPACT concussion software that Northland provides it's families is monitored by Dr. Rand and his staff. We want to provide the best means possible to keep our athletes safe. Dr. Rand not only provides physicals for our students twice each year (once in May and once in August), but they continue to evaluate our injured athletes as they let us know when it's safe for them to continue play.
