Thank You Seniors '09
As we come to the close of another great school year I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to our seniors for their outstanding leadership. We have been blessed as a school to have you on this campus. This is a very talented and gifted class. This class has merit scholars, athletes, musicians, thespians, artists, debaters, and great leaders. Seniors '09 have set the bar high for those students who will be back with us again next year. It has been my honor and my privilege to have worked with this year’s senior class. May God bless each and every one of you as you take this next step in your life journey.
I also want to challenge the senior class of '10 to be prepared to step into the leadership role that is being left behind. This class is also a very talented class. It is my prayer and my hope that next year the class of '10 will lead this campus spiritually and academically and hold themselves to high standards and high expectations. I challenge each of you to be a mentor to our underclassmen. I have already seen God working in many of you and I am excited to see how he is going to use this class to do great things on this campus and in this community.
I hope all our students and families have a safe, relaxing, and wonderful summer vacation. May your summer be filled with adventure and excitement! God bless and I look forward to doing it all again starting in August.
In Him, Cliff Kraner

Bob Reaves Night at the Ballpark

|
Families were on hand to celebrate Bob Reaves Night at the Ballpark on April 7th. This annual event began last year with Bob’s retirement from Northland after 13 years of service. Bob was instrumental in starting the baseball program at Northland. Other than a great game against Lutheran North, a trivia game designed by Dan Greer had everyone guessing. Well, everyone except one lucky family, Charles Goodwin successfully answered each question correctly earning him 4 free tickets to an Astros game! Kid’s games were also keeping little ones entertained as they did the “Chicken Dance” to win glow necklaces and whistles.
Everyone who attended received a free hot dog, had a ton of fun and watched a great game!

The Lord is Good; His Love Endures Forever
and His Truth is Eternal
|
Message from Jane Winne, MOMs in Touch
Stop with me today and think about God’s extravagant, exquisite, unconditional Love for us. Let’s take a moment to remember what He has done for us and in us and recognize His Grace that’s brought us through this school year. As I reflect on the difference His Presence makes at NCS, I am undone with all the evidence of His blessing and provision. The Lord has indeed been the answer to every prayer and petition we have brought before Him. I would like to take this opportunity to boast of some of the victories we have all been a part of as a family on this campus. Every faculty member, coach, teacher and student is first of all, His perfect gift, chosen by His hand to be in our NCS family. The staff at this campus is committed to depositing the rich seeds of God’s Word in every classroom and area of enrichment. As a result, our campus is growing more excellent in godly character and integrity. We are now more united in all of our classes, as well as Academic Meets, Debate, Art, Drama, Choir, and all our Sports and Athletic Programs. The Lord has come down and rewarded us with outstanding achievements in every area that we have competed in, either as a team or individually.

National Junior Honor Society 2008-09

The National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society are founded upon the five principles of scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. The qualifying academic requirement for induction is a grade average of 90 or better in all classes, excluding P.E. and athletics, over the past three semesters. Conduct grades, teacher recommendations, and a servant attitude are also important considerations. Please click the following links for the list of students recently inducted into the Northland Chapter of the National Honor Society (grades 10, 11, and 12) and the National Junior Honor Society (grades 7, 8, and 9). Walking Boston Helps 8th Graders Live History
|
The 8th grade class had a wonderful experience tracing the roots of the American Revolution in and around Boston. We climbed inside the Bunker Hill Memorial, sat in the pews of the Old North Church, and walked the freedom trail all over Boston. We stood on the green in Lexington, where the shot was fired that began the revolution. Then we attended a presentation at the Minute Man Park near Concord that traced the first battle of the colonists and the British "regulars." What an incredible experience to help history come alive!
We also experienced a night time tour of Salem with great information about the witch trials, visited the House of Seven Gables (which was made famous in a book by Nathaniel Hawthorne), and toured Gloucester and Rockport by bus. There was time for fun with shopping at the famous Fanuel Hall and candlepin bowling. We concluded our trip with a tour of the Harvard campus. 8th grader, Melody Townsend said that “Boston was beautiful, especially Harvard. The cherry blossom trees are so beautiful!” It was a truly memorable trip!

Our 6th graders were sent into outer space to explore. First, the students learned about the inner planets also known as terrestrial planets. We learned about their rocky crusts and what makes their surface different than the outer planets. The outer planets are known as gas giants and are made of…; you guessed it gas. They have rings and moons galore. After exploring the known planets of our Solar System, the students were sent on a mission to find another planet, unknown to human kind. The students were to make up a planet and give the facts and description about it, so that we could relate it to our own planets. The planets these kids dreamed up were out of this world! The students had to name it, and just to give you a taste of their thoughts, there were titles such as a mixture of 2 names, candy land with a world full of candy, names that explained what the planet was made up of, and much more. Once we got the facts and had a model to grasp the visual part of it, the students had to make up a story about their visit to this unknown planet. Some of the stories were done as journal entries; some were done as a space mission from NASA, and some were written as a comedy. All were wonderful, imaginative stories that one newsletter could not contain. The models they made were out of all sorts of things Styrofoam, Play-Doh, cakes of all shapes and sizes, candies, and brownies; we especially liked the food planets. Some students even brought in food that was a delicacy by their planet’s inhabitants! The project was so much fun and the kids really took the ball and ran with it. They were able to be creative, intuitive, astronauts that thought outside the box. If you stopped by our room you will see what I mean; you will be transported to another galaxy with all our planets still orbiting around the room!
The 8th grade IPC classes were put into the cockpit of a car race. Their objective was to build a car made of clay, film containers, toothpicks, straws, and other house hold items. After their car was constructed, using their own engineering; these cars needed to be tested. First we tested which cars from each period would win a race. They needed to have wheels that would spin, weight to carry them down an incline, and good engineering to make sure the car wouldn’t come apart during the testing. All of this may sound easy until you put it to action. The students would make changes upon changes of modifications to their cars to make sure they were in the best shape for their team. After we ran a few races we needed to test the car’s speed. We learned that Speed = Distance/ Time. So we had to set up an experiment to test it. We had meter sticks and stop watches clocking the times and distances of each competitor’s car. Afterwards we graphed the speed and made comparisons of how each car did. These kids had such a fun learning experience trying to construct these cars.
Doing projects with the students is such a fun way to involve the students in what they are learning. Not only do they see it on paper, but it comes to life and into use with projects!

Thoughts from the Campus Minister

2008-09 Spiritual Life "Good News"
I don’t watch the news. I don’t even enjoy reading the news. As far as I can tell, the very definition of the word “news” has warped into an exclusively negative word. To escape the negativity I watch Sportscenter, but now most lead stories in the world of sports are not about what happens on the field of play, but off the field of play. Now most stories in sports don’t involve bats hitting baseballs, but needles injecting steroids.
It’s time for a change. It’s time for a return to the “feel good” story we long to hear. It’s time to redefine the word “news” into a celebration of bragging on God for his goodness and kindness. Believe me, there has been no shortage of God’s faithfulness at NCS! This year has produced multiple examples of God working and moving on the campus of NCS, and these stories can be read at our informative website. Certainly there are encouraging articles to be found by clicking on SPIRITUAL LIFE, but there are encouraging articles spread throughout the website, from all the departments.
So, brew a cup of coffee, set aside some time, and reflect on the school year by soaking in God’s faithfulness. Read about a young girl paralyzed in an auto accident who is now walking again. Read about a student-initiated garage sale that generated more than $,4000 for the children and widow of Mr. Brad Wims. Read about two sixth-grade students, who after hearing of an NCS graduate who was recently diagnosed with MS accrued more than $4,000 to help fight multiple sclerosis. Although these stories are merely a sampling of God’s activity on the campus of our school, they are more than enough to convince us that God is still very much in charge of the news, and our victory in Jesus Christ is eternally secure!
All this and more just waiting to be discovered at the NCS website under the Spiritual Life tab!

The Junior Class hosted the Junior/Senior prom at Hotel ZaZa on Friday, May 1st. Everyone arrived at the event looking their very best. The hotel was appropriately decorated to fit the “Where the Wild Things Are” theme. The evening began with a smorgasbord of “comfort food” that was enjoyed by all. Throughout the night, prom goers were entertained by a photo booth, caricature artists, and a very lively pair of DJs. A good time was had by all.

35 Years
in the Making |
From the moment you walked in the door at the Spring Fine Arts Concert, the tone was set. The Jazz band could be heard playing tunes that made you want to dance. As the band played, audience members perused art and photography displayed throughout the gym. The choir and orchestra concert took us through the ages with hilarious drama skits intermixed. The audience shook their groove thing in the ‘70’s segment, fell back in love with love songs from the ‘80’s, and laughed as the Men’s Choir moved and grooved to 90’s boy band hits. The orchestra played songs from movies from those decades, including the theme from “The Godfather”,” Star Wars” and “Forest Gump”. There were even musical arrangements composed by several of our Fine Arts students. Paul Lindsay and his senior back-up singers, Mike Cano, Derek Manning, Drew McConnell, Jonathan Nguyen and Evyn Pierre, brought down the house with a choreographed version of “Escape” by Julio Iglesias! The night closed with the choir performing “You Raise Me Up,” a special tribute to Grant Zeinert’s memory. It was a fantastic concert enjoyed by all; Northland truly has talent!

"You Can't Take it With You" |
On May 7,8,9 NCS High School Drama produced the 2009 Spring Comedy to raving reviews. Laughs could be heard throughout the show: from Ellen Marsh’s witty lines, Sean Palizza stripping down to tights, Josh Walther posing in a toga, Emma Wilhelm prancing in a tutu, to the rest of the cast hamming it up every minute of the show.
More than 25 students participated in the show, acting, running tech, and preparing hair and makeup. This fun loving, zany comedy was set in the summer of 1938 in the home of Martin Vanderhoff (Kevin Norwood), a man who would rather have fun and enjoy life than spend the day slaving away on Wall Street. His life philosophy has infiltrated his family and everyone he comes in contact with. His house is full of free spirited people who love life, love each other, and do as they please. But this life philosophy is questioned when Martin’s youngest granddaughter Alice (Morgan Mogler) falls in love with Tony Kirby (Sam Greer), the son of a successful Wall Street Banker. Hilarity ensues when the Kirbys (Taylor Shirley & Ashley Sheffield) arrive at the home for an elegant dinner but find the family in all its glory! These household guests stole the show! The hilarious Russian ballet instructor (Sean Palizza) who had a solution for all of life’s issues, the dim-witted housemate (Josh Walther) whose toga scene will not be forgotten, and the beautiful, drunk actress (Hannah Davis) will long be remembered for their brilliant comedic support. By the end of the show everyone realizes that life is short and You Can’t Take It With You!
Other students involved included: Shelby Blocker, Tim Goodwin, Tyler Hazard, Sarah Holley, Ali Knudson, Leslie Lewis, Jessica Maddox, Derek Manning, Ellen Marsh, Dustin Martin, Robert Pina, Shaunley Sharp, Bailey Werderich, Emma Wilhelm, Nikki Wilson. |

One-to-One Laptop Program
Northland launched its One-to-One Laptop Program in 2006. Now completing its third year, the program enhances learning and teaching with technology and also embeds technology into the core curriculum. Each student in grades 8-12 has access to their own laptop with a comprehensive software package. The program has provided new creative opportunities and truly reoriented the classroom learning experience at Northland Christian School.
As you will recall, the original One-to-One program was a three year program using NCS-owned Gateway laptops for our students. We are now at the end of the initial three year program and the school is pleased to announce several key changes to this program, the most important of which is that the school will be changing from Gateway laptops to Apple MacBook laptops. Parents will now have the option to either purchase Apple MacBook computers for their students or to use school-owned MacBooks as part of our One-to-One Laptop Program for the 2009-2010 school year.
Informational Meetings were held recently regarding the changes to our One-to-One Laptop Program. At these meetings, NCS staff presented the details of this program and answered questions. Representatives from Apple and Spirit of Texas Bank were also in attendance at both meetings to answer questions and to facilitate the financing of a computer for parents who choose to purchase a computer.

PTO News!

A very special “thank-you” goes out to all donors and buyers to the NCS “Clean House” Garage Sale!! It was a great success! Donations of all kinds were received and resold, with the remainder picked up by Northwest Assistance Ministries at the end of the sale. A total of approximately $3,900 was collected, and the school was well publicized. Bargains were found everywhere!
Thanks go out to all of the PTO grade representatives, parent and student volunteers who worked hard to make this sale happen - there are too many to list. The colorful banners helped immensely to advertise the sale and were donated by Michael Reiland, Integrity Images. Thanks also to Beth Martin for donating the t-shirts to the PTO.
The PTO is winding up the year by hosting the Honor Society Receptions and staff luncheon, coordinated by Linda Martina and Jan Knudson; and Middle and High School graduation receptions, coordinated by 7th and 11th grade representatives. The Incoming/Outgoing PTO Board Luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, at the Lodge at Shirley Acres.
The PTO closes another year in working together for a common purpose – to promote the well-being of the children and to unite the forces of home, school and community – what a joy this is!

“To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” (Revelation 2:7)
“He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.” (Revelation 2:11)
“To him who overcomes, I will give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.” (Revelation 2:17)
“To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations.” (Revelation 2:26)
“He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.” (Revelation 3:5)
Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name.” (Revelation 3:12)
“To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.” (Revelation 3:21)
“He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.” (Revelation 21:7)
It is amazing sometimes how the worst of times can be the best of times when we look back on them. This has certainly been a year of overcoming obstacles. We were sidelined by Hurricane Ike that had us sitting in the dark for weeks, and we are still facing down the adversity of a dwindling economy. I know that both of these events have affected the Northland Community greatly, and I would like to thank all of you for your continued commitment to Northland Christian School even though I know it has become more of a sacrifice.
I would also like to thank this year’s seniors for their example in absorbing hardships. It has been a very rough journey for them as well the past few years. They lost a beloved classmate, Grant Zeinert, and somehow managed to come closer together as a group. They included themselves in countless activities in athletics, fine arts, debate, and academics that kept them overwhelmingly busy, and did many great things for the advancement of the Kingdom of God such as organizing blood drives, drum-a-thons to raise money for Christian documentaries, and countless other service projects. The seniors have certainly overcome.
I say all of this because of the hope that the Bible gives us that one day all of the things that hinder us and the busyness that distracts us will all be over once we have overcome. Until then, you have my promise that Northland Christian School will continue to find ways to help equip our students for everything that life will throw at them. I look forward to seeing all of our pillars in heaven and learning each of our new names. Until then, happy overcoming!

Blessed by Our Past, Learning from our Future
- Kent Hart |
What an incredible year we have experienced. Thank you for your prayers and support all year long. God has done some wonderful things in the hearts and minds of our kids this year. Whether through struggle or mountain peak experiences, I pray that you have witnessed your child grow spiritually, mentally, physically, and socially.
I just returned from our National Day of Prayer Chapel. Yesterday, each student wrote prayer requests. Today each student placed his/her requests in a, "HE is able" box. It was wonderful to witness each student come forward and place his/her requests with the Lord. Even though we don't know what each student specifically wrote as their request, the elementary is committing to pray over the collection of request throughout the remainder of the school year. The, "HE is able" box is located at the Welcome Center. Please join us by praying for all of our children. Our prayer for each child is that he/she will develop an intimate relationship with their God and Savior through ongoing communication with their Creator and Lord. We pray that each boy and girl would understand the deep love that God has for each of them.
May the Lord bless you and your family. May his protection surround the heart and mind of your child.

Learning About the World Around Us
|
Multi-cultural Week has the 1st grade classes working on some pretty amazing art projects. Stop by Mrs. Goodrich’s room to see the display of “Wild and Wacky” mask. Students researched masks from around the world, from Louisiana to Mexico, even Africa. Students were given hard cardboard face molds, beads, gel pens, buttons, colored pebbles, pipe cleaners, feathers, colored plastic strings, and glitter glue and let their imaginations go to work! The results were some very interesting and sometimes scary looking mask!
If you see rain clouds forming over Mrs. Mitchen’s class, then their rain sticks just might be working! Students studied about the Chilean belief that shaking rain sticks brought rainstorms, and then they created their own! Using Pringle cans and filling them with rice, the students created their own rain sticks and colorfully decorated them using their own design. So carry an umbrella if you decide to stop in for a visit to Mrs. Mitchen’s room!

A giant, chocolate chip muffin and cup-of-coffee were on hand for a special picture with Mom’s favorite mini-muffin or stud-muffin. A special thanks to Elementary PTO for providing orange juice for this event! There were even two dads there serving muffins and juice – thanks Matt Hill and Brad Eller!
Parents are always welcome to come to chapel and spend this special time with their children! Northland looks forward to many more events that celebrate our students and their families!

Under the

|
"Under the Musical Big Top" an NCS Variety Show was an incredible showcase of talent. Every elementary student was on stage participating in a collaborative musical performance. The Honor Choir started us off and the evening continued with the third, fourth, and fifth grade orchestras all playing separately and concluding with a combination of the fourth and fifth grade orchestras playing "Bach Country Fiddles". The Fifth Grade Recorder Ensemble and Chorus entertained us with three folksongs on the recorder and surprised everyone by their terrific two-part harmony on the choir pieces "American Game Song Medley" and "Charlotte-Town". The Kindergarten through Fourth Grade brought the house down with their musical "Circus Circus". We had clowns, acrobats, pantomimes, jugglers, and more wanna be ringmasters than you've ever seen! All in all the evening was a great success and a fabulous display of the talent we have here at the Elementary Campus. The auction was also a huge success with over $12,000 raised in support of our school!

Congratulations to this year’s Science Fair winners. Northland 5th graders are challenged every year to compete against each other in one of three categories. After doing extensive research, planning and log keeping the students have to present their project following the criteria given them by Mrs. Owens. More importantly, they have to orally defend their project to a group from Exxon-Mobil. Hard questions are asked and students have to give composed, concise answers that show the benefit of the results of their project.
Congratulations to our first place winners:

The Fifth graders put their learning in motion, Newton's laws of motion that is. For two weeks, the fifth grade class has been creating balloon racers that applied three of Newton's Laws of Motion.
The students had to not only overcome excessive car mass or create a greater force but they also had to balance their action and reaction for a smooth motion. There was much creativity displayed as they used recyclable materials in ways no one has ever thought of before.
Some cars made it to the finish line while others had to go back to the drawing board but overall fun was had and learning was "on the move".
4th Grade students used their creativity to design space ships that would successfully land on a unique planet surface. Using their knowledge of mass, volume, and density, students used Styrofoam cups, pipe cleaners, foil, Nilla wafers and gumdrops to create a space ship that could rest on a surface of “goo” without sinking.
Friday night, the 3rd graders were treated to a special viewing of the moon. Over the last month, 3rd grade has been studying and graphing the different moon phases. Friday, the McLean family generously offered their time and telescope to let the students view the full moon phase. This large telescope allowed the students a better look at the full moon and it’s varied surface.
Greater learning is achieved when students can have a hands-on experience. By having a pull-out Science class, Mrs. Owens is able to get the students more involved in learning!

“Put a SQUEEZE on Cancer!” |
Inspired by a story about Alex Scott, a little girl with cancer who raised money by selling lemonade, first grader Maddie Pallanez opened her own Lemonade Stand 2 years ago. Each summer, Maddie has committed to selling lemonade as part of “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” a foundation that raises money for cancer research. This year, Maddie would like to share this opportunity with her fellow classmates, and you. She is asking her Northland classmates to join her in working a lemonade stand Friday, June 12th through Sunday, June 14th. Parents and students wanting to participate, please contact Alicia Pallanez.
Be looking for where you can find these lemonade stands and visit http://www.alexslemonade.org/stands/7839 for more information and to donate!
God has blessed Northland with compassionate students such as Maddie. |

elementary campus Hop to It!:
Jump roping is more than just fun; it is also a great cardio workout! The Jump Rope Club has been perfecting different jumps as a group and individuals each Friday. By jumping in groups and trusting the other jumpers to do their job, each member of the club learns the value of teamwork. Using their eye-hand coordination, jumpers are able to learn various types of jumps and foot and leg movements. You probably have seen these jumpers at work as they performed at this year’s PE show!
Artistic Endeavors
Each Friday, several third, fourth, and fifth grade students gather to experience art with parent volunteer, Melanie Oliver. Students work with different mediums such as clay and pastels, create gifts such a jewelry boxes and cards, and learn about different techniques like shading and blending. Creativity is (of course) encouraged, while all levels of artistic abilities are celebrated. This month, the students focused on Mother’s Day gifts. Little do the students know, they are developing their fine motor skills while having fun and getting to socialize and collaborate with students from different grade levels. |

We LOVE our teachers! During Teacher Appreciation Week, Northland elementary teachers have been smothered with cards, flowers, fruit, candy and teacher’s favorite - hugs from their students! Parents appreciate the amount of love and individualized attention that our students receive. They know that teachers not only spend hours preparing for the weeks lessons, but also praying for our children.

Elementary PTO News!
Thank You from Sherra
This has been an outstanding year and it has been a privilege for me to serve in the capacity of PTO president. Thank you for all of your prayers, kind words and unending support throughout this school year. As we close out this year and prepare for the next, I am humbled by the generosity that you continue to bestow on this campus, especially during these economic times. Our campus is blessed by each child that it serves and you, our parents, have continued to enrich the lives of our faculty and staff through encouragement and support.
Grade Level Auction
Our PTO hosted its' first Grade Level Auction in conjunction with the Spring Concert. Thanks to all of you for supporting this event and bidding on our grade level art and teacher sponsored items. Many of the items up for auction could not have a value assigned to them, because they truly are priceless, for example, having your child's "kindergarten-sized" thumbprint on a cookie jar or their "third grade-sized" hand print embedded in a piece of artwork These works of art serve as reminders of a time of innocence, youth and growth. Our teacher lunches were also a huge success, especially for our fifth graders. Mr. Shives and Mrs. Ashworth's Limo Lunch stands to make over $4000.00 for the campus. Way to go 5th Grade!!!!!
End of Year Luncheon
Elementary PTO Board will meet Thursday, May 14th at Shirley Acres Lodge for its end of the year luncheon. NCS Board of Directors are invited to attend along with elementary administrative staff. This is an opportunity to meet incoming PTO board members and say good bye to those members that will not be returning next year. Please contact Gina Vasquez for more information.
2008-2009 School Year
Each year brings about a new beginning and welcomed changes and as we end this year on a high note, I am reminded of our school years' past. Our kids have grown by a year and we have learned a little bit more about this evolving "little" person(s) that demand so much of our time. Parents take a moment to enjoy these last few weeks of kindergarten or fifth grade with your children because as they enter the next phase of their education these are the times that you wish you could hold onto forever. Do you remember when they first recited the Books of the Bible or memorized their first scripture or led a prayer? Our children grow daily, but Northland enriches their educational experience with Christian values that help prepare them for life outside of the classroom. Continue to encourage your children spiritually, emotionally and academically, you are their resource for life.
Thank you and have a blessed summer. We look forward to seeing you next year.
Sherra Branch, NCS Elementary PTO President

Thoughts from the Preschool Director

Summer is almost here and the children are having spring fever. Preschool has been very busy. The four year olds had a wonderful time at the Downtown Aquarium. We were able to see many species of fish and a playful group of sting rays. The train ride was awesome because we were able to ride under the shark tank.
The 3 and 4 year old open house was well attended! Thank you parents for taking an interest in what a typical day looks like and what to expect next year! The book fair was well attended with record sales.
Our 3 year olds performed their Spring Has Sprung program on, May 7th, at 7:00 pm in the Worship Center. They practiced very hard and provided us with great entertainment.
Open enrollment is still going on for Summer and Fall. Parents, if you haven't already enrolled, please go to the website and follow the instructions under Parents Web. If you have any questions, please call Sharla Sheffield at 281-440-377 in the Preschool Office. Thank you for a great year and we hope to see you next year. |

Ready for the Rainbow

|
If you hear the sounds of animals coming from Ms. Donell’s room, don’t worry. Her 2 year old class has built an ark. After it was finished, they loaded up all the supplies that would be needed. Food was brought on board for Noah, his family and all the animals. This week the door was shut and the rain started. The forecast calls for rain all week with 100% chance of flood. Next week calls for a rainbow.
Fine motor skills were taught including the proper hold for crayons and pencils, and the use of scissors. They stretch their imaginations and drew animals. Reasoning skills were used to decide what types of food the animals needed. Sorting skills were required to put the correct animals either in the ark or to have them swim beside it. By working together they shared, cooperated and even negotiated increasing their social skills. Children learn by playing and play to learn.

The Easter Bunny made a surprise appearance to Northland’s preschool students during their Easter parties Thursday, April 9th. Mrs. Wiley’s 4-year-old class saw him on the playground while they were hunting eggs! Each ran over for a quick picture and then the bunny filled their baskets with candy. Thank you Easter Bunny for the exciting
visit!

I Didn't Mean to Bug You!
|
On May 7th, the 3 year old Preschool class presented their spring program, “Spring Has Sprung." Parents were entertained with songs and finger plays. Joining the parade of bugs were Mrs. Salinas' ladybugs, Mrs. Sullivan's caterpillars and butterflies and Ms. English's bees. Mrs. William's class were ducks and last but not least were Mrs. Tosh's raindrops. We had a wonderful time enjoying the children dressed in their costumes. Mrs. Manitz presented a video of all the 3 year old classes throughout the year. Thank you, parents, for a great year with your children.

Powder Puff Football Game
The annual grudge match, known as the Powder Puff Football Game, went down at Cougar Stadium on Friday afternoon May 8th. Of course, it was insanely hot in the bleachers, and things got even hotter on the field as the Junior and Senior girls went at in a touch football game. Well, it was supposed to be touch, but the action got a little heated after the second play of the game when Laura Ashley ran over a Junior. On 4th down, Megan Schulte caught a long bomb from Robyn Archer to give the Seniors a 7-0 lead. The Juniors evened things up after a Summer Petro interception, with Kailey Perkins tossing a touchdown to Sarah Steele. With the game tied
7-7, the Seniors went to work behind some clutch catches by Kelsey Hickman and speedy running by Laura Ashley. The Seniors proved too much in the end, pulling away 28-7 and keeping the Senior Streak alive.

HIGH SCHOOL -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Northland’s Golf team Congratulations to the golf team for advancing to State which was held at Cinco Ranch. The team was led by sophomore Zack Baldwin and senior Alexander Smith. The conditions were tough, the round was long, and the team came together to move up in the rankings. Congratulations to the team and to Coach Joachim for a great season. See you on the greens.
Varsity Softball The Lady Cougars finished wrapped up their season on Friday after a long hard fought few months. The Lady Cougars competed in, what is without question, one of the toughest districts in the state. However, the girls never once backed down or gave up in a game, but instead fought hard to the end. Many of our games were much closer than the scores indicated. As a coach I could not have asked more from the girls this season. There was never a point in the season or a game in which the girls gave up or quit working hard. Each game the girls not only played great softball but they displayed Christian character and class. My goal this season, as in any season, is to win games. However, my ultimate goal is to teach the girls that life is much like the game of softball and there are many life lessons to be learned, the most important of which is to honor the Lord in victory and in loss. In each victory or loss I can honestly say that your Lady Cougars were always the classiest team on the field, representing Northland and Christ well. This year we will lose 5 great seniors. Laura Ashley, Kelsey Hickman and Megan Schulte have each played all four years of their high school careers. Mary Lacy Knapp has played three years and Robyn Archer was a new addition to our team this year. Each girl brought something unique to the team this year and without them we would not have been the team that we were. Allison Gilbert served as our manager for the past three years and has also added a special dynamic to our team. Each girl will be greatly missed not only for her talent and ability but also for her own individual personality and character. Personally, I would like to thank these girls for the hard work they have dedicated over the past years to building this program into what it is today. The underclassmen have a big job ahead of them as they prepare to step in and fill the holes that these special young ladies will leave.
High School Baseball The Northland Christian Baseball Team finished its season May 2nd with a 6-4 loss in the Bi-District round of the playoff to San Antonio Christian. The Cougars hosting their first play-off game in years outhit the visiting team 12-6, but failed to put the game away early on. Cruising to a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning, the Cougar defense came unglued as SA Christian score three runs with 2 outs to tie the game. Down the stretch, SA Christian made the plays that were necessary to continue a play-off run. The Cougars finished the season with a 12-11 record and second place district finish. Three Cougar players, senior pitcher Kyle Serres, senior infielder Stuart Trahan, and sophomore catcher Matt Sinclair were named first Team All-District district. Sophomore pitcher Trevor Winne was named to the Second Team All-District Team. The Cougars dropped both district match-ups against Second Baptist, but swept the season series with Ft. Bend and split with Lutheran North and Westbury Christian. The Cougars also defeated Lutheran South and Concordia Lutheran in their only match-ups this season. Kyle Serres led the team in batting avg. (.417), ERA (1.88) and complete games (5). Stuart Trahan led the team in home-runs (4), runs scored (20) and slugging percentage (.688). Trevor Winne led the team in victories on the mound with 5.
Cougar Tennis Once more congratulations are in order for the Cougar Tennis team. Taylor Coffman, Jonathan Nguyen, and team Alexander Smith and Jonathan Lane all qualified for the STATE tournament in their divisions. This year our team took more qualifiers to state than ever before. Although the results are not what we wanted, our students played to their best of their abilities and left everything on the court. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Abaroa, Mrs. Lane, and Mrs. Smith for all their help in making this season a great one.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Middle School Baseball The MS baseball team finished 4-3 for the season. In the District tournament we only played 1 game before the tournament was called off due to rain.
We have some very talented 8th graders that will help out at the Varsity level next year but what I'm very excited about is all the talented underclassmen that will be returning next season. We should have a another great season.
I would like to thank Mr Hatcher for helping out with practice all season long. Mr. Hatcher would take off work and be at the field by 2:45 to make our athletes better.
Coach Webster
The Middle School Softball A Season to Remember - We entered the season with two returning players from last year, Taylor Huff and Amanda Organ now both 7th graders. There was a lot of uncertainty about who might try out for the team and when sixteen girls showed up, we were very pleased. Two quickly decided that they had other things to do, so we ended up with 14 players for our roster. The great thing was that all of the girls were excited about softball. Even the inexperienced girls were not deathly afraid of the ball as some beginners might be. Our baby Cougars worked on fundamentals of throwing, fielding and hitting. All of them wanted to practice and all of them wanted to improve. That is exciting for a coach.
We had our returning starting pitcher in Amanda Organ who does not pitch anywhere other than Northland Christian School. She plays other positions in select ball, so she needed to re-learn about pitching. Others like Taylor Huff and Hannah Thompson showed interest in practicing pitching although only Taylor actually pitched in games other than Amanda.
Hannah asked to work on catching and she took to it right away. We had experienced sixth graders in Hilliary Hooker and Brittney Delacruz both of whom have played select ball. They turned out to be the left side of our infield although they spent occasional time behind the plate as catchers. They are going to be contributors to NCS softball for years to come.
Taylor Huff worked hard to become a good first baseman. She did a good job and continues to improve. Melody Townsend also spent time at first base when Taylor was either not available or playing other positions. Melody was one of our four 8th graders who really contributed to the team. The others were Natalie Erichson and Nikki Mueller who both played primarily outfield in addition to Hannah, the catcher.
We had a nice addition to our team with 7th graders, Jasmine Barnes and Siera Coulter. They always had good attitudes and kept the team together from that standpoint. Both showed great improvement in softball skills and each of them made key plays defensively as well as contributing offensively with hitting, bunting and especially base-running.
The bulk of our team was comprised of 6th graders. That is a big reason why our motto became, “We are the Future of NCS Softball – The Future Starts NOW!” They are the long term future of NCS softball and all of them showed great promise. Besides Hilliary and Brittney, Annie Kraner, Daniela Salinas, Tori Huff and Sydnee Waldon all had key moments where they performed incredibly well. Annie made some really heads-up plays at 2nd base, often getting the lead runner out at second base. Tori made one spectacular play in right field by gunning out the batter at first base! Sydnee had several key hits in critical situations which helped us to win games. Daniela, while tentative for much of the season, broke out towards the end of the season to become an aggressive base-runner. She should really grow as a softball player next year.
The season was one which we will not forget soon. We had a streak of 10 straight wins including a couple of “grudge matches” against our normal district rivals. In all cases, we found a way to prevail. It was primarily aggressive base-running and key defensive stops which led to the wins. Many of the margins of victory seem large, but there were a number of close games until we closed them out. Our season ended with a loss to a clearly outstanding Fort Bend team with at least nine select players. We gave it our best shot but came up short.
- Final season record 10-1, can claim to be “District Champs – Undefeated”
- Outscored opponents 109-35
- No official arrests made even though team stole many, many bases
Middle School Track The conclusion of the Middle School track season was even better than anyone might have imagined. The coaches set the mark in February for the District Championship in all four divisions.
The 2009 team did not let us down! These 50+ athletes won in every division by 140 pts or more. Just amazing!!
Check athletic.net for the results - you will be proud of the Cougars.
