 NCS students have the option to choose orchestra as an elective beginning in third grade. We begin with Dr. Suzuki’s method of teaching, believing that all children can learn to play an instrument before they can read music, through daily listening of pieces, dedicated practice and parent involvement. Third graders learn to play by ear and then learn to read music. Each year the students learn more complex music reading and theory skills. They also perfect their performance technique, tone and intonation skills. In addition to instruction on violin, viola and cello, the program includes school performances, off-campus community service performances and, for secondary students, group and individual competitions.
