Northland's Art Department includes rotation classes for 6th grade students, and one semester Art classes for 7th and 8th graders. The purpose of middle school Art is to expose students to a variety of media and techniques, and to introduce Art History.
High School Art 1 is for students without previous high school visual arts experience. It includes a general overview of art concepts and some art history, as well as a variety of studio experiences. Learning basic techniques and design concepts is stressed. Art II provides a chance for a deeper exploration of certain media and experimentation with new subject matter. Small classes allow an individualized approach.
In Digital Photography 1, students construct a pinhole camera, learn composition skills, and darkroom procedures. The use of the computer will be employed in order to find creative solutions in producing photographs. Historical developments, contemporary uses, and career opportunities related to photography will be explored. Digital Photography II is a continuation and extension of first year Photography, Photography II enables students to concentrate on expression and to explore photography concepts in more depth.
Digital Art is for students who have completed either Art I or Digital Photography. Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter are used to explore graphic design and expressive content using digital media.
AP Studio Art F\is for highly motivated students with at least two years of high school Art, AP offers the opportunity to earn college credit. By completing twenty-four high quality pieces, students break through to new levels of technical proficiency and expressive strength. Portfolios are graded by the College Board in slide form. Students must submit an application and be approved by the faculty advisor.
