Cougars Fall to St. Joseph High School in Bi-District Playoff |
What a great year! With only seven Varsity players, the Lady Cougars had a dynamite year taking 1st Place in the Galveston O'Connell Tournament, 3rd Place in the District, 4th Place in the District Tournament and advanced all the way to the Bi-District Playoff. While injury and illness plagued the team the entire season, the Cougars fought hard the entire time, never letting the opponents walk away with an easy win! Saturday found the Cougs in Victoria, Tx competing against St. Joseph's High where the team fell in 4 to the Flyers. Never giving up, the team was competitive till the very end. Thanks to Coach Gonzales for a winning season and advancement thru District where the season finished Saturday at 25/13. It was an emotional Saturday as Seniors Lindsey Serres, Summer Steele and Kate Terry wrapped up their volleyball careers at Northland. Thanks is due these three for their consistency and dedication to the team, they will surely be missed.

october 13-14, 2006: NCS MS Volleyball district tourney |
The MS District VB tournament was hosted by NCS. The A team was seeded second for bracketing purposes, but we were tied with Covenant Christian as far as the district records went, so whoever won the tournament was going to earn the title "District Champion". Our first tournament match was against the #5 seed, Woodlands Academy Prep. This team has really improved and it wasn't an easy match, but the Cougars were able to win, 25-21, 23-25, and 15-6. The Championship match went just as expected - Covenant vs. Northland. We fought hard and I thought the girls pulled together as well as I have ever seen them, but we could not overcome the Covenant serving strength, nor their two "big girls". Final scores were 18-25, 18-25. The Cougars finished the season 2nd in district. |
| |
october 12, 2006: NCS varsity Volleyball vs. Awty |

october 5, 2006: NCS MS Volleyball vs. holy trinity episcopal |
The C team finished their season with a win in a match against Holy Trinity Episcopal. The scores were 25-14, 25-23. Melody Townsend served 8 in row! This team finishes with a perfect season against a variety of competition - everything from Club VB to the 5/6 graders of Holy Trinity. Congratulations to the Cougar C team -great finish.
Another perfect season was had by the B team! With the defeat of Holy Trinity, the B team finished w/ an 11-0 record and were the NCS B team tournament champions.
Scores from the Holy Trinity match were 25-7 and 25-11. Our serving dominated this team; the Cougars only made 4 service errors. Great job, B team, on a super VB season! |

| |
october 2, 2006: NCS MS Volleyball vs. cypress christian |
The B team comes in undefeated as they get ready to take on the Cypress Christian Warriors at home. The first game was a close one, but the Cougars pull it out, 28-26. In the second game, we let thoughts of Homecoming take over and we slipped to 15-25. I know this is a solid team, but with everything going on this week....I wasn't sure if we could pull out the last one. But credit goes to the Cougars. They are taking an undefeated season to heart and rallied together to win the third game, 15-6. Super job, B team!
A team knows that the Warriors want them! Our last match together was not a good showing for Cypress and today, they came in to win. Our first game, Cypress takes the lead behind the serving of #12. She served 10 in a row and led her team to a victory, 25-19. In the second game, the Cougars rally back and win, 25-22. Again, with Homecoming and cheerleading, I am not sure we can do it, but the Cougars stayed with the Warriors point for point until Paige Cornwell comes up to serve. The last 4 points came off strong serves by Paige and the Cougars won the match, 15-9. Way to go, A team! |

september 23, 2006: NCS MS Volleyball @ concordia tourney |
The A team competed in the Concordia Lutheran Tournament today. Last year, we won the Consolation bracket; this year we were planning on something better. The girls won every game in their pool in the morning, something none of the other 9 teams could say. Our first game in the bracket seeded us against Annunciation. We were a little slow to start because we had had a 3 hour break, but the girls finished this match with a win.
Scores: 15-17, 17-3, 17-7. The Championship game put us against St. Edwards Catholic School. We had beaten this team in the morning during pool play. Unfortunately, we could not beat them again. Scores: 13-17, 16-18. The Cougars took 2nd place overall. |
| |
september 22, 2006: NCS MS Volleyball vs. st. francis |
Friday, Sept. 22, was a great day for the C team! They not only beat St. Francis once, but twice. St. Francis brought two teams to NCS and the C team took care of both of them. Serving was our weakest area, but the rest of the game was played well. Scores: 25-17, 25-21 and 25-17, 25-13. |
| |
september 21, 2006: varsity Volleyball VS Lutheran South

Karen Karasevich had 23 digs, Kelly Cossey 14 assists, Summer Steele 3 solo blocks and Kate Terry was credited with 7 kills. The Cougars played smart and stayed tough, anticipating South's every move as they kept a substantial lead thru each of the 3 games. This exciting win brings Northland to a 21/7 record for the 2006 season. Go Cougars!

26-24, 25-15, finishing the night with Match score 3/0. With their injured players returning to the court, the Cougars had an easy time in games one and three, but in game two allowed the Mustangs to catch up despite an early Cougar 17-4 lead. Northland held strong by winning with 26. Northland hosts Lutheran South in their second district game Thurs. Go Cougars!

The Faith West Eagles traveled to NCS and were defeated rather easily by the B team. This group of Cougars continue to put together a winning package for Middle School VB. Scores: 25-8, 25-9. Elizabeth Byrne and Katie Paschal led in the serving dept!
The A team after an easy first game, lost focus and lost the second game! Great serving by Madison Flowers gave us the edge in the 3rd game and we were able to win the match. Scores: 25-12, 15-25, and 15-7. |

Cougars Have Big Opening Day at Tourney |
It was a big opening day in Richardson for the Volleyball Lady Cougars. Defeating Canyon Creek Christian and Shelton School in two and splitting a match with Parish Episcopal had the team taking 1st Place! Bracket play begins for the Cougars Sat. morning against Dallas Lutheran. Lindsey Serres re-injured her right shoulder late in the 3rd match against Shelton. This injury and the ACT's will sideline Serres for the Sat. morning matches and with Marie Dort out with a right ankle injury, the Lady Cougars have their work cut out for them! Stay tuned for further updates, Go Cougars! |

September 14, 2006: NCS MS volleyball vs kingwood
A mix of the A and B players traveled to Kingwood to play today. We didn't put our best foot forward, but the girls are fundamentally sound and were able to defeat the Warriors, 25-22 and 25-17. Strong serving by Brianna Pierce and Katie Paschal kept us in the match. |

Junior Lady Cougars B Team Wins |
The 6th Annual B team tournament brought good results for the Cougars.
The C team had a chance to get alot of needed playing time and though their record did not show well, their game is definitely improving. Great leadership is being shown by 7th grader, Katie Savoy and Ali Knudson. The B team won their pool in a tough match against Cypress Christian. It took us 3 games, but we were able to bring home the trophy! The whole team played well, but we must highlight 3 players: Rebecca Matthews served 13 in a row in our game against SATCH, Katie Paschal was key in defense and served 9 in a row in the 3rd game of the Cypress match, and Leslie Lewis was a leader at the net. Congratulations to the B team!

September 7, 2006: NCS C TEAM Volleyball
This was the first game for the C team. A big case of "nerves" took over in the first game and the Cougars lost 16-25. As we begin to warm-up and put our game plan together, we were able to pull wins in the next two games. I was very proud of the girls and the way they stayed tough against a very experienced team. The scores for games two and three were 26-24 and 25-22.

September 5 , 2006: NCS ms Volleyball
In a district match against Holy Trinity Episcopal, both A and B teams won very easily. B team scores were 24-4, 25-12. Leading server was again, 7th grader, Lauren Mozey. She served 9 in a row, including 3 aces. Right behind her was Madison Flowers with 9 in a row and 2 aces. A team scores were 25-14, 25 10. Serving 6 in a row were Brianna Pierce, 4 aces, and one jump serve. Next in line was Taryn Eubanks with 6 in a row. The Cougars remain undefeated in district play. |

August 30, 2006: NCS ms Volleyball
Another game on the road, but this time just to Tomball for a non-district match against St. Anne's Catholic School. The girls really had to look up to their coach today because she was the referee! Things worked out well though and both teams won. The B team serving star was Katie Paschal with 12 in a row, including 2 aces! Good game play at the net by Leslie Lewis and on the back row by Madison Zeinert gave the girls an edge. Scores were 25-22 and 25-10. The A team put together a great match today in both games. The serving leaders were Paige Cornwell and Christina Ball. The leaders in attacks were Paige Cornwell and Amy South. Scores were 25-12 and 25-14. |
| |
August 28, 2006: NCS ms Volleyball
The Middle School VB teams traveled to Katy Faith West for another victory in district. The B team took control early and never let go. The final scores were 25-11 and 25-8. Serving honors go to Lauren Mozey; she served 10 in a row. Katie Paschal and Leslie Lewis are setting for this team. Our most outstanding hitter today was Jasmine Gassaway. It took the A team 3 games to pull out a win. This team starts out like superstars and for some reason, start to fizzle in the second game. But by the third, we manage to get it back together. Scores for this match were 25-16, 20-25, and 15-6. Serving 6 in a row today were Liz Abt and Amy South. Beautiful passing by Paige Cornwell allowed our offense to run well. Keep your eye on this A team - there is all kinds of potential here. |

Day 2 at Fort Worth Christian found the Lady Cougars finishing 2nd place in the Gold Consolation Bracket. Injuries and illnesses caused Coach Ray to utter "next time I'm traveling with duct tape and glue......!" The Cougars are idle until the John Cooper Tournament 9/7-9. |

August 26, 2006: NCS HS volleyball
Day one at the Ft. Worth Christian annual PIT tourney found the Lady Cougars plagued by injury as Summer Steele went down at the net early in match play against Carrollton Christian. She suffered a right ankle sprain putting her out for the duration. Freshman Sarah Steele stepped in to finish the match. Cougars finished in 2nd place in Pool play on Friday, August 25. Saturday morning found the Lady Cougars falling to Pantego Christian in 2 games moving the team to the consolation side of Bracket play. |
| |
August 24, 2006: NCS ms Volleyball
The B team played their first District match today against W.A.P. Their game play even impressed their coach! I was so proud of the effort and attacks they sat up. The B team defeated the Wolverines in two games, 25 - 9 and 25 - 19.
The A team is a group of very talented players and we are learning a new offense. It all came together in the first game. We won easily 25-14. In game two, we lost focus and lost the game in a close one 23-25. Game three was never really in our control, but they were able to pull it out winning 16-14. We learned some good lessons in this game!
