Northland Christian Continues Win Streak
By LSCSN.com
Houston — Northland Christian wasn't even really on the TAPPS 5A volleyball radar when the season opened, but after downing three Top 15 teams over three days the Lady Cougars have moved all the way up to No. 8 and NCS just keeps on winning.
Head coach Ray Gonzales said his squad was a bit sluggish in Monday night's 3-1 win over No. 15 Katy Faith West. And rightfully so after the emotional wins the Lady Cougars were coming off of over the weekend at the annual O'Connell Consolidated Gulf Coast Classic.
The Lady Cougars beat then No. 15 League City Bay Area Christian twice in pool play last Thursday before taking out then No. 8 FWA on Saturday as well as No. 11 Houston Lutheran North in the finals 2-1.
Faith West downed NCS 3-1 in the season opener in Katy, but since then North-land Christian has dominated the Lady Eagles. NCS won in two straight on Satur-day 25-21 and 25-23.
The Lady Eagles made the short trip eastward on Monday night and Northland Christian, now ranked where FWA started the season at No. 8 in the latest LSCSN.com poll, treated its visitors to a 3-1 setback.
It looked as though Faith West was going to avenge its loss on Saturday as the Lady Eagles took advantage of the slow start by NCS, winning game one by a final of 25-16.
But Northland Christian broke out the rally caps and went on to win the next three by a final of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-22.
While she didn't light up the scorebook Monday night, the Lady Cougars continue to rally around injured teammate Lindsey Serres, who normally a righty is playing the season left-handed because of shoulder problems on her right side.
Senior Kate Terry led the Lady Cougars in kills with a match-high seven, while Karen Karasevich led the NCS defense with 16 digs.
Lauren Mordel finished the match with six kills to top the charts for Faith West, and teammate Shailey Roe led the Lady Eagles in digs with 10.
Northland Christian will take its new ranking to the Metroplex later this week where the Lady Cougars will take part in the Ft. Worth Christian volleyball tourn-ament, which gets underway on Thursday.
