Girls Swim Team Wins Regional Championship
Boys Finish 4th, Look Forward to State
On January 20-21 the Northland Christian boys and girls high school swim team competed in the South Regional Swim Meet held at the University of Houston. Following the final races on Saturday, the girls team had clinched the South Regional championship and the boys, with only 5 swimmers, finished in 4th place. Several swimmers qualified to compete for a state title on February 3 and 4 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center at the University of Texas. To qualify for an individual event at the state meet, a competitor must finish among the top 8 in the Regional Championships.

Leading the way for the girls was junior Meaghan Gomm and sophomore Haley Wilson. Gomm finished 2nd in the 200 yard freestyle and won the grueling 500 yard freestyle by an astounding 25 seconds. Wilson came in 2nd in the 100 yard back stroke, touching the wall less than one second behind the winner. Wilson then won the 200 yard individual medley, winning by more than 10 seconds. Gomm and Wilson also helped the 400 yard freestyle relay to a first place finish, defeating Lutheran South by more than 10 seconds. Then the tandem guided the 200 yard freestyle relay team to second place, missing 1st by just over a second to Fort Bend Baptist.

Sophomores Adriana Pierce, Courtney Nunley and Lauren Lawson also qualified for the state meet in multiple events. Lawson finished 3rd in both the 100 yard butterfly and 500 yard freestyle. Nunley was 4th in the 100 yard freestyle and came in 3rd in the 100 yard backstroke. Pierce finished 3rd in the 100 yard breaststroke and 6th in the 50 yard freestyle. All three girls were members on the champion 200 yard medley relay along with junior Brynn Schertz, who also qualified for state by finishing 3rd in the 50 yard freestyle.

Sophomore Lacey Neagle was the final state qualifier for the girls by placing 7th in the 100 yard breast stroke. Neagle also finished 18th in the 50 yard freestyle event.

This young girls' team (2 juniors and 5 sophomores) is among the favorites to win the state meet next weekend.

With only 5 boys competing, NCS captured 4th place at the South Regional Swim Meet. Northland was led by Junior Josh Hawkins who placed 2nd in both the 100 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke. Both scores will qualify Hawkins for the state meet. Junior David Goman will also be competing at the state meet by finishing 4th in the 100 yard backstroke. Goman and Hawkins pace the 400 yard and 200 yard freestyle relays at the state meet, both teams placed 2nd in regionals.

Sophomore Adam Kapasi narrowly missed qualifying for state by finishing 10th in the 100 yard breaststroke. Kapasi also finished 18th in the 50 yard freestyle race and will be alternate for the boys relays at the state meet.

Paul and Chase Lindsey will fill out the starting positions in the relays at the state meet. Paul also finished 15th in the 50 yard freestyle event.
