Varsity Softball Game Summaries

Highlights May 4, 2004

The Varsity SB team defeated Bay Area Tuesday night, May 4, by the score of 4-3.  It was by far the most exciting game of the season.  The Lady Cougars kept saying throughout the entire game they were going to win, and despite 4 errors earlier in the game that gave Bay Area a 3-0 lead, Northland rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning to score 4 runs.

Lynsey Clissold led off the inning with a triple.  Molly Wahlberg hit her in.  With two outs, Kelsey Burkhalter and Kate Terry hit back to back singles.  Then, Becca Crawford came in a hit an inside-the-park homerun that won the game.

Northland will play their regional game vs. S. A. Cornerstone on Thursday in Shiner, TX.  The time is tentatively set for 6:30, but that is subject to change.

Please come out and support us if you can.

Highlights May 6, 2004

The Lady Cougar softball team came up 1 run short of playing in the State Tournament for the first time in school history.  They lost to S.A. Cornerstone Thursday night by the score of 9-8.  Cornerstone has been in the State Championship game the last two years, winning it two years ago.

Once again, resembling a few other games this season, the Cougars made 5 early errors, giving Cornerstone a big lead.  Despite being down 9-1 late in the game, this team showed everyone what they were made of.  Their "keep fighting-never quit-we're going to win" attitude came through as they rallied to score 7 runs in the top of the 7th inning.

The Lady Cougars out-hit Cornerstone 13-10.  Out of 32 at-bats, we only had 3 strikeouts; Cornerstone had 5.  The girls hit the ball hard all night.  It just didn't fall when we needed it to.  This Northland team showed more class after losing than you could imagine.  I've been blessed to be around these young ladies.

The Lady Coogs finished their season with a record of 11-5 advancing to the Regional finals the last two years.  We feel confident that we can continue our success at the 5A level next year.
