We finally started our season with possibly the toughest opponent we will face this year…and we got them TWICE in 50 hours! Unfortunately for us, they now have not only one but two pitchers who pitch year round and they are both good. In contrast, we rely on our pitcher who only pitches for 6-8 weeks per year during Northland Christian’s season. We actually had a chance to stay in both games, but our overall inexperience showed with numerous errors which all led to runs allowed. The good news is that our team will start to make more of those plays as the season goes on and Coach Kraner and I wish that we could have seen Faith West a bit later in the season for at least one of the games.
Defensively, our pitching improved between games by walking only one batter in the second game as compared to five in the first game. We struck out 3 batters in the first game and 4 in the next game. However, our errors were still very prevalent in both games – five errors in the first game at Northland and seven errors at the Faith West field. This WILL improve dramatically as they gain more experience and confidence in their abilities.
Offensively, we had few base runners in either game. Our batters struck out 10 times in both games. Two struck out looking in Game One while four watched third strike in Game Two. We only had 16 batters total in Game One and 14 in Game Two, so the intimidation factor by hard throwing pitchers made a difference. That will also change. There are some girls that are getting some pretty good at-bats, so maybe we can figure out how to string together some timely hits and score some runs in bunches.
Attitude is very good all around. The players that are new to softball are soaking it all in while the others are also learning something every day. |
