This game proved the old sport saying that anything can happen on any given day. The Lady Cougars were confident going into their game against Houston Christian but that confidence did not last long when Houston Christian took a 7 - 1 lead in the first inning. It seemed that everything the Lady Mustangs hit fell just beyond the reach of our gloves and everything we hit fell into the gloves of the other team. However, the Lady Cougars never gave up and showed a lot of heart as they mounted their comeback. Our defense picked up and held the Lady Mustangs scoreless for the next 4 innings. Sophomore Megan Schulte made a spectacular play chasing down a hard hit fly ball and then throwing behind a runner to get the double play and end an inning. Offensively the Lady Cougars began mounting their comeback scoring 2 in the third and 3 in the fourth. Leading the charge were sophomore Jessica Maddox who was five for five with five singles, and junior Ashley Scott that went four for five with four singles. Sophomore Kelsey Hickman added her own touch with a stand up triple and senior Molly Wahlberg added a double. The Lady Mustangs mustered a charge in the sixth scoring two runs to tie the game at nine. In the top of the ninth Hickman started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior Summer Steele. Wahlberg next reached first on an error and Schulte advanced the runners to second and third with a hard hit ball to the pitcher. Maddox loaded the bases with a single to center and Scott had the game winning RBI with a hard hit ball to deep short. The Lady Cougars showed exactly what they were made in this game. At no point did these ladies ever give up or doubt the fact that they could come back and win.
