The Lady Cougars were definitely prepared headed into this game and it showed. Having worked hard to improve their defense we held the Lady Crusaders scoreless for 5 innings. Senior Kate Terry was one of those leading the defensive charge. She made a great catch on a hard hit ball to deep left center and then threw the runner out at second for an inning ending double play. Sophomore pitcher Ashley Sheffield did a spectacular job on the mound holding a powerful offensive team to a limited number of hits, and only two of those hits made it to the outfield. Offensively the Lady Cougars continue to struggle but they fought hard to the very end. Senior Lindsey Serres singled in the top of the seventh with a perfectly executed slap. Serres then stole second giving the Lady Cougars the chance to tie the game. However, although Summer Steele hit the ball hard the Lady Crusader's second baseman made a great play to end the game with a score of 0 - 1. As a coach I was most proud of the intensity that we showed on the field today. There was never a point in the game that any of the girls doubted their ability to come back and win. They played hard until the final out was called. When the game was over the opposing coach gave the team the highest compliment I think possible. She said she always enjoyed playing us "because (you) have such a classy team." Although the loss hurt and we will continue to work hard to improve, I was reminded that this team daily represents Christ and plays for His glory...something much more eternal than a win or a loss.
