NCS vs. Duchesne

3-3

After having several games canceled due to the weather the Lady Cougars were anxious to get back on the field. However, this game proved to be anything but conventional. In a game where several key players were missing the Lady Cougars started 5 players in new positions, some for the first time ever. Laura Ashely took up pitching duty forcing Kelsey Hickman to move over and fill Laura’s spot at shortstop. Megan Schulte then filled Kelsey’s spot at third which brought Brittany Flowers in from the outfield to fill Megan’s spot at first.  Freshman Marissa Hernandez started at second leaving only our outfield in their usual places. It was a game of challenge and the girls did an excellent job. Our defense really stepped up and played well despite what the score might have indicated. We had our second and third double plays of the year. The second double play happened after Hickman made a great stop and throw from short to first.  Brittany was head’s up and immediately made a great throw across the field to third to catch the runner trying to advance. This ended the inning and Duchesne’s last attempts to score. Offensively we struggled but were led by Laura who had a stand up triple. Senior Ashley Scott, Brittany, Mary Lacy Knapp and Marissa each had singles in the game but we were simply unable to put the hits together to score. Although the score showed that we were beaten easily that was not really the case. The girls played incredibly hard, especially considering several were playing a position they had never even practiced. I was proud of their effort and their attitude this game as it would have been easy to make excuses. However, the girls didn’t.  Instead they stepped up and played with purpose and determination.

NCS vs. Houston Christian

4-3

After a hard fought game earlier in the day the Lady Cougars were ready to step back into their familiar positions and face district opponent Houston Christian.  With pitcher Ashley Sheffield returning to the mound the Lady Cougars played with the confidence of a team that knew they could win.  In the first three innings the defense allowed only one runner to reach base. Ashley did an excellent job, striking out 2 hitters and allowing only 2 hits for the entire game. The Lady Cougars came out ready to attack offensively as well with 8 girls getting hits.  This game was full of hits as Kelsey Hickman, Ashley Sheffield, Jessica Maddox and Megan Schulte racked up 5 doubles, with Kelsey picking up two herself. Brittany Flowers, Ashley Scott, Mary Lacy Knapp and Sheffield all had singles giving the team a total of 11 hits. This win gives the Lady Cougars a winning record and a confidence that they can take into district play starting Monday.
