The Lady Cougars showed their determination and left their hearts on the field Friday. In a game that saw the score go back and forth the Lady Cougars never stopped believing they could win, and win they did.
After scoring the first run of the game the Lady Dragons of John Cooper came back and scored to tie the game in the second inning. After 6 and a half innings of play the Lady Cougars found themselves trailing by a score of 4 - 2. With day light slipping away the Lady Cougars thought they were facing their last at bat. Junior Laura Ashley started the inning off with a huge stand up triple to right field. Junior Kelsey Hickman then stepped into the box and hit a single allowing Ashley to score. Junior pitcher Ashley Sheffield did her part to help herself offensively by sacrificing and allowing Hickman to advance to third. Then with two outs junior Jessica Maddox singled and scored the tying run. With the score now tied the umpire decided to let the teams continue to play another inning in hopes of deciding a winner.
Our defense held strong and made a quick three outs of the first three batters. Now it was our time to decide the game. Sophomore Sarah Steele was first to bat and hit her first single of the game. Stepping up to the plate next was senior Ashley Scott who did exactly as was asked of her, she laid down the perfect bunt to move Steele to second base and into scoring position. Next sophomore Brittany Flowers stepped into the box and laid down a beautiful bunt and even beat the throw out to give the Lady Cougars a perfect opportunity to win the game. After Flowers stole second the Lady Cougars had runners at second and third for Ashley. Ashley hit a hard line drive to third and Steele got a great jump on the pitch. The third baseman hesitated on her throw just enough to allow Steele the edge. Although the play at home was close, Steele was clearly safe. I could not begin to tell the girls just how proud I was of their determination and their “never say die” attitude. Trailing most of the game it would have been easy for the girls to give up but they never did. They kept fighting and believing they could win. There are still several areas we need to improve on but the girls are getting better everyday. With this win we finished the week 2 - 2 and head into next week with some confidence.
