After suffering a hard loss the day before the Lady Cougars were still seeking to get their first district win. Playing the Lady Wildcats of Westbury the Lady Cougars started sluggish both offensively and defensively. The Lady Wildcats put the first run on the board in the fourth inning after an error. However, the Lady Cougars came right back. Kelsey Hickman started the inning off with a walk and Mary Lacy Knapp laid down a beautiful bunt that allowed Kelsey to advance to second. Ashley Sheffield then hit a hard ball to short that allowed Kelsey to advance to third after the short stop made the play at first. Kelsey was then able to take advantage of a ball that got by the catcher tying the game at one. The defense of the Lady Cougars held strong with several key plays. The play of the game has to go to Kelsey who snagged a line drive that came off of the bat of Westbury’s best hitter. Keeping her head up Kelsey then threw to first base to get the runner at first out for the only double play of the game. With a little motivational push from the coach the Lady Cougars came out in the bottom of the fifth inning to score three runs. The inning started with a perfect slap laid down by Brittany Flowers. Ashley Scott then put down a perfect bunt that allowed Brittany to advance to third. Laura Ashley then did her job by hitting a fly ball to right field. An error on the right fielder not only allowed Brittany to score but also allowed Laura to stay on base. Laura then stole second for her third stolen base of the game. Mary Lacy Knapp stepped up and laid down a beautiful slap bunt. She then stole second and was in scoring position when Ashley Sheffield stepped up to the plate. Ashley hit a great shot just out of the reach of the second baseman and the right fielder that allowed Mary Lacy to score. his was the first game of district that the Lady Cougars were able to string together several key hits in one inning that allowed several runs to score. Overall the Lady Cougars had eight hits, many of which came at critical times. Today the Lady Cougars proved that they are a team that does deserve respect. The girls will look to keep this momentum going as they face the Lady Eagles of Second Baptist on Thursday.
