The first game of the season proved to be a tough one for the Lady Cougar softball team.  After losing 4 seniors from last year’s team several girls have had to step into new positions.  In addition, with the first game there are always first game jitters.  However, junior pitcher Ashley Sheffield did an outstanding job on the mound. Although she gave up a few hits, most were simple bloopers just out of the reach of our fielders. Also, she did not give up a single walk in the game. There were several outstanding defensive plays made, one by junior left fielder Mary Lacy Knapp and several by junior short stop Laura Ashley.  Offensively the Lady Cougars struggled. Several players made great contact with the ball hitting line drives. Unfortunately the Lady Mustangs made some great defensive plays of their own and managed to field every ball hit in their general direction. I was very proud of the girls as they never gave up and they fought hard until the last out of the game. We definitely walked away from this game having learned some valuable lessons and look to improve with each game.
