It was a workmanlike effort by the Cougars as they kept control of District 4 with an easy 40-0 win over the Lutheran South Pioneers. In a game that lacked the fireworks of last week's win, the Cougars obviously did enough to put the game easily out of reach by once again combining a balanced offensive attack with stout defense and solid special teams.
The game started out much like last week, with Matt Krob taking a handoff 72 yards on the second play for a touchdown. The try for two points failed, but the Cougars got it back on the very next play by recording a safety on the kickoff. Seven plays later Kyle Serres kicked his second field goal of the year, from 31 yards out, to put the Cougars up front 11-0. That score remained until Jeff Abt hit a wide-open John Martin for a 48 yard TD and an 18-0 lead. The Black Swarm defense held the Pioneers to 3 first downs in the first half and Jeff Abt knew what to do with the ball when he got it back, hitting Mike Ellisor in the end zone from 25 yards out for a 25-0 halftime lead.
The second half was much like the first, with the offense piling up yards and the defense playing very stingy ball. Matt Krob added one more TD with three minutes left in the 3rd quarter and Stuart Trahan rounded out the scoring with a 9 yard run with most of the 4th quarter still remaining. The Black Swarm registered it's second shutout in three weeks, never allowing the Pioneers inside their 30 yard line and playing very physical. The offense piled up 400 yards for the fourth time in five weeks, and Matt Krob went over 1000 yards on the season. Michael Ellisor is quietly gaining ground on the school records for receptions in a season (37, Jon Hinson, 2002) and yards in a season (689, Jon Hinson, 2002). Jeff Abt continues to add to his ongoing school record for passing yards in a season, and has already broken the marks for completions and attempts.
The Cougars now only need one win in their final two district games to win the district. On Friday they take on a very much-improved Ft. Bend Baptist Eagles team who is coming off wins of 49-28 over Second Baptist and 49-44 over Westbury Christian.
