In a showdown between the last two undefeated teams in district, the Northland Christian Cougars fought off a pesky Houston Christian Mustangs team and cruised in the second half to a huge 52-31 win.
The Cougar offense was in top form all night, scoring on the fifth play of the game and continuing a blistering pace until the game was out of reach for the Mustangs. Jeff Abt directed a nearly flawless attack as the Cougars punted only three times, committed but four penalties, had no turnovers, and rolled up 496 yards. Abt's favorite target on Friday was Mike Ellisor with four catches for nearly 100 yards and two beautiful touchdowns.
The brightest star in the game though was senior Matt Krob. He has been solid all year, but Friday he showed what he is truly capable of, especially when running behind the likes of guards Matt Fisher and Josh Yerian, tackles Keenan Woods and Kirk Wilson, and center John Kenward. Matt had his biggest day as a Cougar, rushing for 253 yards on only 16 carries and 5 touchdowns! He is showing himself to be a very special running back, capable of taking it the distance every time he touches the ball.
The Black Swarm defense was solid in the first half but couldn't overcome a few early mental mistakes and so allowed 17 first half points. After some key halftime adjustments, though, it was lights out for the Mustangs as they did not record another first down until there were only 6 minutes left in the game. Two late scores by the Mustang regulars came against younger players and made the final appear closer than the game actually was.
With 3 games remaining on the district schedule, the Cougars must now take care of business versus Lutheran South, Ft. Bend Baptist, and Lutheran North. See you in the stands this Friday!
