| The Cougars took on the Concordia Lutheran Crusaders on Friday night and came out with a 61-55 victory on Saturday morning!
The Cougars knew it was going to be a 48 minute battle with the Crusaders and it was all that plus 4 overtime periods. Up by a score of 35-21 with 5 minutes left, the Cougars inexplicably allowed 2 touchdowns, including the game-tying score with 10 seconds left. Needing to seize the momentum back heading into overtime, the Cougars did just that with a touchdown in the first OT period. Kyle Serres added the extra point. Concordia matched with 7 points of their own. Then it was the Crusader's turn to go on offense first and they scored and added the extra point. Now down 7, the Cougars faced a 4th down with 5 yards to go. QB Jeff Abt, who delivered in the clutch every time he was needed, delivered a pass to Mike Ellisor (who had 8 grabs on the night) at the one yard line. Abt powered in from there and Serres tied the game at 49.
Overtime period #3 began with the Cougars on offense and they delivered yet again. The rules require going for 2 from the 3rd OT period on, but the Cougs could not convert and so led 55-49. The Crusaders answered but failed to convert on their conversion and the game was locked at 55. Now the Cougar offense had the game in their hands, and they took full advantage. Three plays later it was first and goal from the ten yard line and Matt Krob followed excellent blocking to weave into the end zone for the game winner. Fans and players stormed the field and the celebration was on.
The Cougars face Second Baptist for Homecoming this Friday.
