The Cougars took one on the chin this week as they were taken out of their game by the St. John's Mavericks. The final score was 24-13, and the visitors controlled the ball by a 2-1 margin. The Cougars turned the ball over several times in a drastic turnaround from game one.
Things started off well for the home team as Matt Krob returned the opening kickoff 62 yards. The offense sputtered, however, and the Black Swarm defense seemed to never get untracked as well as the Mavericks used a ball-control offense to set the tempo to their liking. There was precious little to cheer in the first half until Jeff Abt hit John Martin with a bomb down to the opponent's 15 yard line. The Cougs punched it in 3 plays later on a 1 yard plunge by Matt Krob. The Mavericks hit a field goal with 20 seconds left in the half to make it a 17-7 game.
Needing a stop to begin the half, the Black Swarm instead allowed a 10 play drive for 7 points by the Mavs making it a 24-7 game. The Cougar offense was more potent in the second half but couldn't put up any points until there was only one minute remaining. Jeff Abt hit Mike Ellisor with a beautiful pass from 11 yards out to make it 24-13.
Standouts for the Cougars were Josh Dennison (just moved up to Varsity this week) with 4 catches for 53 yards, and Aaron Walther (just moved to offense this week) with more than 20 points on the tackle chart. Once again, the mighty Cougars fought until the very end and showed no quit whatsoever.
Next up are the St. Pius Panthers at home on September 22. They are coming off two impressive wins to start the year.
