GAME 7
NCS Varsity @ Mt. Carmel

October 15, 2004

The Cougars extended their unbeaten streak to a perfect 7-0 on the season as they pounded Mt. Carmel 58-6 in a district contest played at the home of the Rebels. In winning their fourth district game of the season, Northland dominated the game from start to finish in all three phases.

Offensively, the Hogs up front paved the way for a punishing ground attack led by tailback Garrett Van Dyke. He rushed for 126 yards on 14 carries and chipped in 2 TD's filling in for the injured Isaiah Castillo. The game plan worked perfectly as the Cougar coaches noticed during film that the Rebel defensive backs played very tight coverage. Matt Krob, Brendan Green, and Clark Fangmeier exploited this using their speed to get behind the defense and catch long TD's from JP Tillman. When the smoke cleared from the first half, Tillman had thrown 4 TD's and the Cougars were up 35-0. The Cougs never punted in the game.

The Black Swarm was once again up to the challenge as, for the fourth time in 4 weeks, they held the opponent to negative yardage in the first half before sitting most of the second and watching the younger players get valuable experience. The Rebels only score came with 11 seconds left in the game.

Special Teams was once again huge for the Cougs as they hit on all eight extra points. Clark Fangmeier returned his third kickoff of the season for a TD and kicked off 7 times into the end zone. Greg Krablin blocked a punt and also recorded a safety when the Rebels punter fumbled the ball in his own end zone.

It was a total team effort. The Cougars are second in the state out of 1100 high schools in margin-of-victory and are ranked #1 in one state-wide poll.
