NORTHLAND MAKES HISTORY

Cougars wrap up
undefeated football season

The Northland Christian School Cougars completed a perfect 10-0 regular season Friday night with a 65-0 thrashing of Beaumont Cathedral. The Cougars improved on records of 8-4 in 2002 and 9-3 in 2003 to register the perfect season. And it was done in very convincing fashion. Consider the numbers: 503 points scored, 84 allowed, 4 shutouts, 5 games scoring 55+ points. The offense was never held to less than 36 points in any game. There are approximately 1100 schools that play football in Texas ; Northland is ranked in the top 3 in scoring and margin of victory.

Friday night was no exception to the wacky numbers as the Cougars racked up some big ones. Despite a 6-3 record for Beaumont coming in to the game, Northland jumped on the Warriors early and often with an aerial show to match anyone. Sophomore QB Jeff Abt completed 13 passes in the first half (309 yards), including a 67-yarder to JP Tillman on the first play of the game. Abt connected with Tillman again in the second quarter and Garrett Van Dyke added 3 short TD runs. Defensive End Austin Carnes contributed with a safety, and Offensive Tackle Allen ‘Biggin' Williams picked up a fumble and rumbled 5 yards for the score to round out a 42-point first half.

The Cougars kept the ball on the ground for all but one play of the second half, a 15 yard TD pass from Abt to John Martin. Garrett Van Dyke punched in one more TD, freshman Erik Castillo scored on a 3 yard dive, and Robbie Goady was credited for another safety to make the final score 65-0.

Some notable stats from the game: Jeff Abt broke the previous school record of 310 passing yards in a game with 324, JP Tillman notched 4 receptions for 165 yards and 2 TD's in his first game as wide receiver, the Black Swarm defense allowed 24 total yards and never allowed the Warriors to cross the 50 yard line. Beaumont had the district's leading rusher coming in to the game, and he was held to 14 yards on 13 carries. Thanks to punt returner Mike Ellisor, the Cougars average starting field position was the Beaumont 42 yard line as he averaged 16 yards on 5 returns.

The Cougars will host the quarterfinal playoff game at Cougar Stadium on Friday, November 19th, at 7:30pm.
