PRACTICE POLICY:
You must practice to run in the meets or you must abide by any special arrangement made with me before the season starts (e.g. two-sport athlete/job). If an emergency prevents you from attending practice, then you must tell me first by email, text, or in person (Do not send word through another runner or attempt to call me. You must tell me face-to-face or email me with your legitimate reason for missing practice no later than the night before practice. Please understand I will decide if your explanation warrants an excused absence or not. I will be fair and expect the same of you. CRITICAL: You must have an updated MEDICAL RELEASE and PHYSICAL before you can even practice! No exceptions!
TRANSPORTATION POLICY:
All runners must utilize NCS-provided bus transportation for all practices and meets (See below for the parent sign-out policy following a meet). Safety is our most important concern, so this policy will be followed without exceptions. No students will be allowed to drive to practices or meets!
PRACTICE PASSES:
Each runner will be given three PRACTICE PASSES, with each one allowing you to miss a practice. You must show me the pass and give me your explanation on why you are missing practice. The pass will allow you to miss, but I need to know your reason to make sure you are safe. Your parents must be aware that you are using a Practice Pass. No additional practices may be missed, unless there is an emergency and assuming you have followed the Practice Policy.
PRACTICE TIPS/RULES:
The above practice times include the time needed for transportation (time leaving NCS and time returning to NCS). Bring your own water and sport drink, and maybe a salty snack, such as pretzels. Bring $$$ in case we stop for a cold beverage to quench your hydration needs. You may also wish to bring a towel to wipe away your hard-earned sweat!
Each runner is required to have a watch/stopwatch for all practices! Cell phones may be used as long as they are secure and not carried in your hand. Music devices are acceptable, but only during the run! Again, the device needs to be secured and not carried in your hands (You need your hands for proper running form). No music devices are allowed at any other time than the run itself! All other times will be used for coaching and team building. Exceptions will occasionally be made on long drives.
UNIFORM POLICY:
Your complete uniform must be returned in original working order. No matter how legitimate your explanation may be you will still be required to pay for unreturned merchandise! Even if, during a meet, you are abducted by aliens and returned three days later no longer wearing your uniform, you will still be expected to pay! That's a shame…
UNIFORM REPLACEMENT COST: Thou shalt protect thy uniform!
As stated above, runners will be held responsible for all lost uniforms, regardless of the reason. Here are the individual costs…
WARM-UP TOP - $40.00
WARM-UP BOTTOM - $25.00
UNIFORM TOP - $45.00
UNIFORM BOTTOM - $25.00
In the event of lost items, The NCS Business Office will bill the parents at the end of the season.
FLEET FEET SPORTS – 8220 Louetta – Spring, TX 77379 – 281.370.4140
Just mention you are a runner for Northland Christian School and you will receive a 10% DISCOUNT! GIDDYUP! I strongly encourage you to purchase actual cross country shoes and to be fitted by an expert at Fleet Feet. Purchase your shoes immediately and wear them often, even when not running, so you can get a feel for the shoes to anticipate spots for potential blisters and/or other areas of discomfort. The season is short and a blister, as innocent and harmless as it sounds, can put you on the bench for an extended period of time. Even worse, aerobic conditioning can quickly be lost when you are not running. Again, please purchase real cross country shoes, not running shoes! Take this shoe purchase seriously! Do your best to choose a color that compliments the school colors, but fit is more important than color.
STAY HYDRATED! Quench your manly thirst by regularly sipping and enjoying a refreshing bottle of purified water. We can also strut campus with a gallon of the good stuff! Remember your sunscreen!
IMPORTANT!
We will always depart from Student Parking. Always bring $$$ for lunch following the meet. Always arrive at least 5 minutes before the departure time as the departure time is the time the bus will be actually moving. If you arrive at the departure time, then you will start your race early by chasing the bus. It is against school policy for you do drive yourself to the meet, especially if you are not even a licensed driver. Ouch. You must partake of the school-provided bus transportation to the meet!
ATTENTION PARENTS:
You may claim your runner following the last race, but you must give me an autograph on the SIGN-OUT SHEET – You will not be allowed to sign-out your runner until the final race as all our athletes will be required to support their teammates until the final run in which we have a runner entered. Thank you for your understanding in our efforts to strengthen team camaraderie.
Return times to our campus are too uncertain to announce. All runners needing to be collected from our campus will be asked to call their ride when we depart from the meet location. Hopefully each runner will have at least one parent in attendance for the meet. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to attend to support the runners.
RACES:
Junior Varsity Boys and Girls almost always run 2 MILES. Varsity Boys almost always run 3 MILES. Varsity Girls almost always run 2 MILES. Occasionally there is a change, like with the Rice Invitational, where all races are 2 miles. I will communicate to each runner on Monday at practice what the race distance will be for the next meet. We will then use that week of practice to appropriately prepare for the distance of the next race.
VARSITY LETTERING POLICY:
Below are the three requirements to receive a Cross Country Varsity Letter
1 – You must be a Junior or Senior and run in at least six of the scheduled meets
2 – You must run in the TAPPS State Cross Country Meet
3 – You must not miss more than three practices (unless first approved by Coach Reaves)
STAY HYDRATED SPIRTUALLY AS WELL!
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (I Corinthians 9:24-27 NIV)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV)
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14 NIV)
