A note from Coach Reaves:

By its nature Cross Country is a fertile ground for spiritual lessons. Our first meet was no exception when Royce Nickerson, competing in his first meet, finished faster than any of our varsity boy runners. Royce sprinted one second ahead of our best runner last year, Ricky Mozey. His performance reminded me that it is still okay to compete as a Christian. It is even okay to compete against your own team. Being a Christian does not mean being weak. Whenever the Spirit of God makes an appearance in God's Word, the scene is anything but weak and passive. The Spirit of God is mighty and strong. Gideon, Jephthah, and Saul are just a few examples of God's men responding in power when called to duty. The athletic field, in a Christian environment, is a safe place to compete and prepare for a world where God expects us to stand boldly for His never-changing truth.

Overall, our performance was sluggish on a sluggish course. Rain and mud covered our tired athletes and many stories were shared of bottomless puddles and mountain-sized hills. By no means though were hearts sluggish. Our runners each gave all they could give. No school was at its best for the first meet of the season, so we will keep getting stronger with each meet.

Congratulations to our most successful runner of the day, Miss Hannah Davis, who medaled at this meet for the second consecutive year. Hannah's race strategy was textbook in starting towards the middle to rear of the pack, and when we saw her again, she was sprinting her way to a third place finish in the JV Girls Division. Hannah is tough as nails!
