2004-05 CHEERLEADER SELECTION

Cheerleaders at Northland Christian Middle and High Schools will be selected and function as follows:

  • High school girls going into grades 9-12 will be eligible to tryout for the Varsity Cheerleading squad.
  • Middle school girls going into grades 6-8 will be eligible to tryout for the Middle School Cheerleading squad.
  • Only those girls who have been in attendance in NCS for a minimum of one (1) academic quarter may tryout for Cheerleader. Selection will be based upon staff evaluation (30%) and talent evaluation (70%).
  • Selection will be based upon staff evaluation (30%) and talent evaluation (70%). Candidates not attending NCS at the time of tryouts, must provide teacher recommendations from their current teachers (using the forms provided by NCS).
    • The staff evaluation will be completed prior to the talent portion.
    • Only those staff members who are supervising (teaching, coaching, club sponsors, etc.) a candidate during the current academic year may be involved in the evaluation of that candidate. In all cases, the high and low evaluative scores will be eliminated from each candidate's evaluation score.
    • All Varsity Cheerleader candidates must meet the applicable NCS/TAPPS eligibility requirements required for co-curricular participation.
    • All Middle School Cheerleading candidates must have semester grades of “C” or higher in all core subjects (English; Math; Science; History; Bible) for the semester immediately preceding tryouts (usually the fall semester). Additionally, each candidate must have satisfactory conduct grades with no more than two “4's” and no “5's” during the current academic year.
  • All Cheerleader candidates must be enrolled for the next academic year, with tuition deposit paid, prior to trying-out.
  • Squad Size - The Varsity & Middle School Cheerleading squad sizes will be determined on an annual basis. The following will be considered in this determination:
    • Number of candidates trying-out.
    • Number of candidates who will be participating in other sports.
    • Natural break of the candidates' scores.
  • High School (Varsity) Cheerleaders who choose to play other sports while participating as cheerleaders must communicate their intent to the cheerleading coach prior to tryouts each year. It will be understood that participation in multiple activities may restrict performance opportunities in concurrent activities. Each cheerleader must communicate regularly with coaches to ensure a fair knowledge of expectations and limitations. To facilitate these opportunities, most Cheerleading practices will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on weekdays (to avoid conflict with athletic practices). In all cases, performances and/or games will take precedence over practices.

All elected Cheerleaders will be expected to attend summer camp experiences as required by each squad. This commitment is prerequisite to selection.

NOTES:

1. Parent(s) will be required to attend a pre-tryout informational meeting each year before a student will be allowed to tryout for Cheerleading.

2. All Cheerleaders will be allowed to sell advertising for the annual Sports Program to defray the cost of camp and uniforms. This opportunity was discussed at the informational meeting, March 8, 2005.
