There are pros and cons when playing one of the best teams in the state starting off your district schedule. One of the cons is that you’re playing a solid team after coming off Christmas break as your first game back. We have a tendency of being a little rusty. One of the pros is that the rest of district (for the most part) will tend to be easier and the game will slow down (as far as the pace of play) for our young team.

We did a good job of breaking Concordia’s full court press to start out the game. Our half court offense was where we struggled. We only shot 19 shots from 2 point range (along with five 3 pointers, of which we didn’t make any). We only turned the ball over 21 times, but we couldn’t seem to get good looks at the basket. A few poor plays by us and slow recoveries on the fast break in the 2nd period opened up a commanding for Concordia that they continued to keep for the rest of the game.

They were a better team than us, and if we play them again in the district tournament (before the playoffs) I think we can do a much better job on shooting, blocking out and rotating quicker on defense that will make the game more competitive. We allowed too many uncontested shots for Concordia and didn’t break down well enough while rotating on defense which allowed Concordia to penentrate and pick up some easy baskets.

Freshman Arnelle Pender led the team with 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 blocks and 3 pass deflections to go along with her 5 points. Senior Brittany Flowers led the team with 3 assists, 2 steals and 9 points. Freshmen Gabbie Fontana also had 2 steals, 1 blocked shot and took a charge. Sophomore Madison Flowers added 8 points of her own and was perfect from the free throw line.

As a team, we shot 6 for 24 (25%) from the floor, 0 for 5 (0%) from the 3 point line and 13 for 17 (76.5%) from the line.

We face Westbury Christian on Friday night who is a perennial contender for the State Championship each year. It should be another good test for us as we prepare for the rest of district and the playoffs.
