2009-10 Girls Varsity
02/13/10 Area Playoff - NCS vs John Paul II A L 32-57

NCS - 6 – 9 – 9 – 8 = 32
Second Baptist - 16 – 20 – 11 – 10 = 57

Our last game of the season this year was a tough one. In the first round of the playoffs, we encountered John Paul II (Corpus Christi), who was the # 1 seed out of District 3 and they proved to be more than we could handle on this particular day. Our girls, although limited in numbers due to injury and sickness, played hard the entire game. Only 7 girls made the trip to Corpus Christi. I was extremely proud of them. We handled their press well the entire game. Our shortcomings were turning the ball over the front court on offense, and we had a poor shooting day from the floor. We have to give credit to John Paul. They shot well from behind the arc shooting about 50% from 3 points range, including one 3 pointer with no time left at the end of the second period. We continued to battle during the 2nd half but it was too little, too late.

Brittany Flowers, in her last game as a Lady Cougar, led the team with 3 steals and 14 points, along with 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a blocked shot. Our other senior, Edima Essien, finished the game with 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocked shots. Gabbie Fontana led the team with 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots and was our second leading scorer with 12 points. Madison Flowers led the team with 3 assists, along with her 5 rebounds and 2 points.

As a team, we shot 13 for 49 (26.5%) from the floor, 4 for 15 (26.7%) from behind the arc, and 2 for 6 (33.3%) from the free throw line.

I want to thank Sarah for being a great trainer this year. She’s helped us out as a player and trainer for the last 4 years and we’ll miss her greatly. I’ll miss her sense of humor more than anything else. She always kept us laughing. I’d also like to thank Edima for the last 4 years of dedication and commitment for playing for me and the Northland program. Edima has matured immensely; I have yet to see a player improve as much as she has in a 4 year span. Edima will leave NCS holding records in the Top 5 All-Time standings in 7 categories: offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, rebounds per game, charges taken, blocks, and pass deflections. Brittany (who I’ve had the honor of coaching for the last 6 years in basketball will leave NCS holding 12 girls’ basketball All-Time records including: field goal attempts (1,154), 3 point attempts (359), 3 pointers made (86), free throw attempts (609), free throws made (411), free throw percentage (67.5%), total points (1,263), assists (311), assists per game (2.8), charges taken (45), pass deflections (59), and hustle plays (95). Britt also ranks in the Top 5 in 10 other categories. We’ll miss these seniors and wish them well in their next phase of life.
