2007-08 Boys Middle School

NCS @ Houston Christian Tournament

January 19, 2008

Game 1

River Oaks Baptist
L
32-37
9-4

It was tough to turn on the intensity after just completing the most intense game of the season the night before versus Northeast Christian. River Oaks Baptist was a better team, not because of talent, but because of size. I felt such pride as a coach watching our boys find the needed energy to give our opponent all they could handle. In the last remaining seconds we had a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer, but a victory in this affair was not in the cards. We made a decision at the beginning of our season to only lose a game if it was to a better team. We simply lost to a better team, but we have won every game this season versus and equal opponent or lesser opponent.

John Horsey led again led the team in scoring with 13 points and Mason Bent returned to double figures with 10 points of his own. Bradley Ward contributed 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Bradley’s offer was significant because he played center for the first time all season because our center, AJ Ortenstone, fell ill.

Game 2 Grace Presbyterian
W
29-26
10-4

We made the decision at the beginning of this game that losing was not an option. We simply would not go winless in the tournament. Instead we won a gritty game and took third place in the tournament. In spite of poor shooting, and I mean we could not have shot a basketball into the ocean, we again won with heart and hustle. With only a few seconds remaining, Mason Bent was the hero converting on two free throws to ice the game. He stroked the throws with ice in his veins. Sweet! We lost our focus in the end on the offensive end, but pulled it out by refusing to lose. The victory was not pretty, but then again I have never met an ugly win.

Not many stats in this contest because of the low score and sloppy play. Mason Bent led the team with 13 points and Keaton Hart played a well-rounded game with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals. We did just enough to finish on top.
