Our first district game started out with a bang. The girls came out of the blocks quick in the first outscoring Houston Christian 20-5. I told the girls we couldn't let up. Houston Christian had some great athletes and were well coached. We knew it could come down to the wire; and it did. We only shot 3 for 13 from the field and 0 for 2 from the line in the 2nd period while the Mustangs went on a roll outscoring us 13-6 in the 2nd period. Houston Christian took over the lead late in the 4th with a few minutes remaining. Our girls remained focused throughout with help from Kate (scoring 4 points) and Bailee hitting 3 of 4 from the line late in the game. With 8 seconds left in the game, Houston Christian had a chance to win, but solid defense from Lindsey prevented a lay-up and a last second shot went off the rim. Lindsey and Bailee led the team with 8 rebounds each, Kate and Lindsey tied with 3 assists, Brittany led with 5 steals and Emily dominated the paint with 4 blocks. Kate and Bailee tied with 10 points each and Brittany finished with 8.
As a team, we shot 18 for 53 (34%) from the floor, 1 for 1 (100%) from behind the arc, and 4 for 9 (44%) from the line. The good news is that we started district off with a win, but we know that each week will be extremely competitive and that we'll have to continue to work week in and week out. There's a good chance we'll have to play Houston Christian again in the district tournament.
