The girls came out with some passion tonight. In our second to last home game, and with it being Senior Recognition Night for Lindsey and Kate, the girls were ready to put on a show. We came out strong in the first passing the ball efficiently on offense even though we only shot 6 for 22. Our shots just didn't seem to fall. Defensively, the girls played tough holding Awty to 4 points. At the end of the first period, we were leading by the score of 14-4. The shooting was a little better in the 2nd period as we shot 7 for 19 from the floor. Our defense still held strong as we went into the locker room leading 28-9 at half.
During halftime, we recognized our two seniors, Lindsey and Kate. As they were introduced, along with their parents, Dan Greer read a bio on each of the girls and their favorite memories of basketball throughout the years. They gave their parents roses, and then were presented roses, along with their senior gift bags and a basketball signed by their teammates and the coaches. As the girls sat on the half court line, a 3 minute PowerPoint presentation ran on the screen showing pictures of the 2 girls beginning in 6th grade through their senior year.
The 2nd half consisted of slowing down our offense while trying to be patient and wise in our decision making. We only shot 19 total shots in the 2nd half, but we made 9. The final score was Northland 49, Awty 17. Lindsey led the team in rebounds with 13, Kate led in assists with 4, Lindsey in steals with 8, and Ashley led the team in positive turnovers with 2. Brittany led the team in points with 11, followed by Kate with 10 and Lindsey with 8.
As a team, we shot 22 for 60 (37%) from the floor and 5 for 8 (63%) from the line. We have one more district game to play against Concordia (who currently is in 2nd place) next Tuesday before the District Tournament next weekend.
In recognition of our 2 seniors, I'd like to personally thank them for the last 7 years. In my 9 years of coaching at Northland, they have been the only 2 athletes, male or female, to play for me all 7 years (either in basketball, softball or both). They're leaders on and off the court. They have been raised in great families and both have Christ first in their lives. It shows in everything they do. They will be greatly missed. Thanks for all the memories (Fatty #1 and Fatty #2).
