12-7-06 – NCS vs. Big Sandy
In our first game at the Galveston Tournament, we faced Big Sandy High School. Due to the mandatory choir concert and 2 key injuries, we only had 7 girls available to play. It was a battle back and forth the entire first half, but we went into the locker room with a 19-16 lead. In the middle of the 3rd period, Lindsey Serres had to leave the game in order to perform at the choir concert leaving us with 6 girls. Entering the fourth period, we were ahead by the score of 34-21. Due to Lindsey's departure and Emily and Kelsey fouling out, Big Sandy made a dramatic comeback outscoring the Lady Cougars 24-6 in the fourth. With 5 seconds left in the game and down by 6 points, Bailee hit a huge 3 point shot to close the deficit to 3 points. With only 4 girls, we denied hard and forced a 5 second call on Big Sandy. We had no time outs to use, so we ran an inbounds play and got the ball to Bailee. She launched another 3 point shot that bounced off the rim. We fouled with 1.4 seconds left and they made their 2 free throws to win by five. I was extremely proud of the way the 4 girls played at the end of the game and the effort in which they fought. We lost by the score of 40-45. We shot 13 for 34 (38%) from the floor, 2 for 4 (50%) from behind the arc, and 8 for 19 (42%) from the free throw line (an area in which we desperately need to improve). Lindsey led the team in rebounds with 9 and steals with 3, Kate led with 4 assists, Emily with 2 blocks and Bailee with 19 points.
12-8-06 vs. Bay Area
On Friday we played the Broncos of Bay Area. It was a defensive battle in the 1st period ending with a score of 4 to 3, in favor of NCS. After a good heart to heart conversation between periods, the girls seemed to find their groove. We outscored Bay Area 17 to 8 in the 2nd and 16 to 2 in the 3rd. We won by the score of 43 to 25. Lindsey led the team in rebounds with 11; she also led in assists with 4, steals with 5 and 4 blocked shots. Lindsey and Bailee finished the game with 10 points each. As a team, we shot 15 for 45 (33%) from the floor, 1 for 1 (100%) from the 3 point line, and 10 for 18 (56%) from the line. It was a much improved game from the day before. Now we would face the winner of Baytown and the Wolverines of CHSA in the Consolation bracket.
12-9-06 vs. CHSA
In a battle for the Consolation trophy, this was a great game. We came out strong and posted a 10-3 lead after the first period. They rallied back in the second period outscoring us by the score of 10-2 to lead 13-12 at half. At the end of the 3rd, we were down 19-22, but we knew the game was ours if we wanted it. Bailee and Emily both fouled out in the fourth after contributing 16 points (10 for Bailee and 6 for Emily). Emily had all 6 of her points in the fourth period. The other 5 girls rallied and we dominated the 4th outscoring the Wolverines 18-9. The final score was 37-31 in favor of NCS. Lindsey led the team with 14 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Emily led the team with 3 blocked shots and Kate led the team with 1 charge taken. Freshman Brittany Flowers led the team with 14 points. As a team, we shot 11 for 39 (28%) from the floor, 1 for 1 (100%) from 3 point range and 12 for 17 (71%) from the line. This was the 3rd tournament in a row in which we've been able to bring home a trophy this year. I'm extremely proud of the way the girls are coming together. Lindsey Serres was voted as an All-Tournament selection. Congratulations Linds. |
