The 8th grade girls played a tough opponent vs. Ft. Bend Baptist.  We came out strong in the 1st period, thanks to sharp shooting by Savannah Rangel, with a 9-0 lead.  At the end of the 3rd period, the score was 20-10 in favor of Northland.  Ft. Bend came out with a burst scoring 7 straight points.  We quickly got back into our half court trap and forced several turnovers in which we turned into lay-ups.  Northland held on to the lead for the rest of the game winning by the score of 26-19.  Leading scorers were Brittany Flowers with 13 points and Hannah Krob with 4.  Sarah Steele and Ashley Barnes helped not only with scoring, but great defense.  It was a great team win. Record 4-3 (1-0)

8G: The Lady Cougars came out strong tonight for our 2nd district game vs. the Eagles of Faith West.  Due to illness and injuries, we were down to only 7 players.  We picked up another 6th grader before the game, Brionna Chatman, to bump us up to 8.  We came out strong with our half court trap outscoring Faith West 12-0 in the first period.  The offense looked great tonight.  We passed the ball extremely well and seemed to keep out heads up all game long looking down the court.  We shot 14 for 34 from the floor and we were 3 for 4 from the free-throw line.  Five out of our eight players scored.  Paige, Brittany and Sarah all finished with 8 points a piece.  The final score was 31-4 in favor of NCS. Record 5-3 (2-0)

8G: The Lady Cougars hosted the Titans of Holy Trinity for the first time ever.  Our passing, for the second game, was efficient and we executed well on offense.  As a team, we shot 14 for 37 from the floor and 6 of our 8 players scored.  We played extremely unselfish and hit the post and baseline players often.  Sarah Steele led the team with 10 points and 4 other players tied with 4 points each.  The final score was 28-1.  We're looking forward to a big game on Thursday vs. John Cooper.  Record = 6-3 (3-0)

8G: We faced a solid team in John Cooper tonight.  We started out playing great defense against a team that was just as quick as we were.  We battled hard, but were down by only 4 at half (7 to 11), thanks mainly to Hannah shooting 4 for 4 from the free-throw line.  The 3rd period was our downfall.  We were outscored 7 to 2 due in part to us shooting 1 for 11 from the floor and 0 for 2 from the free-throw line.  The game was closer than the final score appeared.  We missed 3 key block outs in which Cooper put right back in and not being able to seal off a trap when we needed to. We fell short by the score of 14-23.  We shot 4 for 37 from the floor (11%) and 6 for 16 from the stripe (38%).  Record is now 6-4.

8G: Faith West came out for revenge from a week ago.  They were fired up from the start.  The was by far the most physical and punishing game of the season up to this point.  The officials were not calling many fouls either way and the game became a little rough.  After jumping out to a 7-2 lead, Faith West quickly retaliated and brought the score within 3 points by the end of the 1st period (11-8).  We started out the second period in our full court press and half court trap and outscored the Eagles 12-3 in the 2nd.  Faith West continued to fight for the rest of the game.  Bodies were flying everywhere and blood was spilled, mainly ours.  We held on to our lead and won by the score of 40-25.  We shot 18 for 49 from the floor (37%) and 4 for 10 from the line (40%).  Record = 7-4 (4-0).

The girls came out quick tonight stealing the ball several times within the few seconds of the game and converting them into lay-ups.  Overall tonight, our passing was the best part of the game.  Our point guards, Brittany and Taylor handled the ball well and only committed 7 turnovers as a team.  Hannah, Sarah and Ashley all played well on the defensive end.  They blocked out extremely well.  All of the girls were hustling up and down the court and I am extremely proud of the entire team.  The leading scorers tonight were Sarah with 8 points, Hannah with 7, followed by Brittany and Brionna with 6 each.  We shot 15 for 41 from the floor (37%) and 1 for 2 from the line (50%).  Record = 8-4 (4-0)

We had several new additions to this game.  Two 7th graders, Taryn Eubanks and Ashlyn Templeton, were brought up to play in this district game vs. Holy Trinity.  With these 2 girls, along with Brionna Chatman (6th), who was previously brought up a few weeks ago and Cassie Robinson (8th), who has returned from an extended illness, our team has blossomed from 7 players to 12.  We jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the 1st period.  We continued to pass the ball well throughout the game.  After the game was over, several parents from the opposing team complimented our girls on how well they played, including the way they passed the ball and helped some of their own girls off the court.  Holy Trinity, like their parents, played hard and with class the entire game.  They never game up.  This game proved to be one of our best shooting performances of the year up to this point.  We ended the game shooting 15 for 38 (39%) from the floor and 1 for 2 (50%) from the line.  The final score was 33-1 in favor of Northland.  Record = 9-4 (5-0)

We knew we were in for a battle playing against Cypress; we always are.  As one of our long time rivals, they have always given us a great game, including a 4 point game earlier this season won by NCS.  Up to this point, we had beaten the Warriors 10 straight times and we knew they were hungry for that streak to end.  We started out quick with our full court press to a 6-2 lead.  After a few mistakes on defense and Brittany picking up 3 quick fouls in the 1st period, they quickly rallied to an 11-8 lead after the first. They retained their lead for the rest of the game. Northland was down by 7 points at half, 14-21, but outscored Cypress in the 3rd 10-4 to bring our deficit to 1 point. Cypress pulled away in the fourth to win the game by the score of 45-33. I saw a lot of positive things in spite of the loss.  Sarah Steele had an amazing game shooting 6 for 7 from the floor and 50% from the line to end with 15 points. We, as a team, continually fought until the final buzzer. We played with a lot of character and class representing Northland and Christ extremely well.  I'm so proud of the way we played and handled ourselves on the court. There is a good chance that we will play Cypress again this weekend in the District Tournament which will also decide the District Championship.  Stats for the game ended with NCS shooting 10 for 26 (38%) from the floor and an amazing 13 for 18 (72%) from the line (the best all season)!  Record = 9-5 (5-1)

NHAL Middle School Basketball Tournament
Information Letter        Girls Bracket

We began the day playing the Eagles of Faith West. Due to a variety of circumstances, we only suited out 8 girls for the tournament. As usual when playing Faith West, it was a physical game with a lot of intensity. We came out strong scoring 12 points in the first period to lead 12-5. The rest of the game followed suit. We won by the score of 39-23. Paige and Brittany led the team with 9 points each. As a team, we shot 16 for 60 (27%) from the floor and 7 for 32 (22%) from the line - one of our worst for the year. It was a good win no less. Record = 10-5

In our second game, we faced the Warriors of CCCS (Cypress Community Christian). This game was by far the best and most exciting game of the season.  It was a thriller to the end. We went into this game tied with Cypress in the district standings. Our district records were tied at 5-1. Not only was this game deciding the District Tournament winner, but also for the District Championship. We had our goal set for our 5th straight, but fell a little short. The game began with Cypress jumping out to a 10-4 lead after the first. We only made 2 of 15 shots. We brought the score a little closer in the 2nd to end the first half down 10-15. In the two prior games vs. CCCS, we had outscored them in the 3rd by the combined score of 22-5. This game was no exception. After a few halftime adjustments, we came out and outscored them again (10-3) to lead by the score of 20-18 after the 3rd period. In the fourth period, Brittany and Sarah fouled out, Hannah started to cramp in her right calf muscle and out shooting % as a team fell greatly. We shot 1 for 10 from the floor 1 for 4 from the line in the 4th period. With only a few seconds left on the clock, we were trailing by 1 point. Paige made a long pass down the court to Taylor. As Taylor caught the ball, she shot it with no time left on the clock. She missed the shot, but was fouled in the act of shooting. She stepped up to the line with confidence and drained the first FT. Her second shot went in and out.  As we began the first overtime period, Hannah's leg was getting worse. The remaining 5 girls were put to the test and played marvelous. With 13 seconds left in the overtime period, we found ourselves down by 2 points. We used up the last timeout we had and drew up a play to score. The girls ran it to perfection and with only 2 seconds left, Paige shot the ball with a girl in her face and hit nothing but net. On to the second overtime we went. By this time, Hannah's left calf began to cramp and she was out for good. We battled hard, but lost the game by the score of 28-32.  We finished the game shooting 12 for 42 (29%) from the floor and 4 for 15 (27%) from the line. I was so proud of the way the girls played and handled themselves. We took 3 charges during the game and every time a player from Cypress hit the floor, we were there to help them up. Several of the Cypress parents came up to me after the game game to compliment the girls on how they played with such character and heart.  Record = 10-6

29-7
Our season came to end an last night in an anticlimactic fashion.  For the first time in 8 years, we played a game after the district tournament.  Because 4 games were either cancelled or postponed this year for a variety of reasons, I wanted to play as many games as I could, even if it meant playing a week later. There wasn't much anticipation after losing such an exciting game vs. Cypress, but we wanted to finish the season with a win. Clay Road Baptist came to fight and get revenge for a game we played several weeks ago. After the first period, we were ahead by only 2 points, 7-5. We turned on the full court press during the second period and outscored the Eagles 8-0. We moved the ball around well and had a lot of fun. The girls, as usual, played with a lot of class. We won the game by the score of 29-7. Leading scorers were Brittany with 8 points and Hannah with 7.  Sarah had 2 block shots.  I will definitely miss these 8th grade girls, but look forward to next year and the team I will have.  Record = 11-6 (5-1)
