The 8th grade girls basketball team played in their first district game last night.  We were victorious by the score of 32-17.  Brittany Flowers led the team with 9 points and Katie Spoleti and Kelsey Hickman each had 6.  More impressive than the scoring was the intense defense.  Allison Gilbert led the team with 6 steals.  Faith West had a very scrappy and aggressive team, but the Lady Cougars stepped up to the challenge.
This brings our overall record to 2-3 (1-0).  We've got several games and a tournament before Christmas break.  Then we have a full schedule when we get back from Christmas break before the District Tournament in February.

The 8th grade girls basketball team defeated Ft. Bend Baptist last night by the score of 25-11.  They played great defense in the second half holding Ft. Bend to zero points in the 3rd and only 3 points in the 4th period.  NCS had 7 players out of 12 that scored points throughout the game.  That makes it hard for opposing defenses to stop.  Our half court trap combined with our full court press made it difficult for Ft. Bend to get in a rhythm offensively.  This game was truly a team effort.  This brings our season record to 3-3.

The Lady Cougars traveled to Cypress to face off with the Warriors.  The Cougars started out with an early lead and were up by the score of 19-12 at half.  The second half lead was cut down to 2 points, but we stepped up the defensive pressure and expanded the lead back up to 4 points.  Despite a few turnovers, the Cougars rallied late and expanded the point margin and won by the score of 31-24.  Seven of the ten girls that played scored points.  It was a great team effort tonight.

The Lady Cougars traveled to Kingwood last night to face the Warriors of Northeast Christian.  Only 8 girls made the trip because of the fine arts performance.  Three of the eight girls had to leave after the first period.  The remaining 5 girls:  Aubrey Smith, Ally Gandy, Hannah Krob, Kelsey Hickman and Brittany Flowers fought extremely hard for three periods to pull out a 22-11 win.  Our defense, which consisted of a full court press and a half court trap for the entire game, was the key to our victory.

We played Ft. Bend for the second time this season.  It was a defensive battle from the start.  Northland was leading 12-1 at half.  We were outscored 5-4 in the second half, but held on to win by the score of 16-6.  Our defense is really looking good after coming back from Christmas break.

On Saturday, the 8th grade girls played 3 games in the Sweetwater Tournament.  They defeated Sweetwater in the first game by the score of 47-1.  In the second game, we defeated Northeast by the score of 19-9.  They played in the Championship game late Saturday afternoon against a select team, the DLP Angels.  We battled in the beginning and were losing after the first period by the score of 5-7.  We ended up losing by the score of 27-51.  I was proud of the girls in spite of the loss.  We placed 2nd in the tournament and Katie Spoleti and Brittany Flowers were selected to the All-Tournament team.  Congratulations girls.

The Crusaders of Northeast Christian (NCA) came to play on Monday night.  Our goal was to keep them under 10 points for the entire game.  This was the 3rd time we've played them this season.  We (NCS) shot 55% from the floor and 75% from the FT line.  It was our best shooting night of the year.  The Lady Cougars pulled out another win by the score of 37-8, bringing our overall record to 11-4 (4-0).

The 8th grade girls ran up against a tough opponent last night when we played John Cooper.  It was by far the most physical game of the season.  The girls played tough and I was proud of their efforts on and off the court.  We played with a lot of class.  We ended up losing by the score of 14-30, but we look forward to playing them again next Thursday here at Northland.

The Lady Cougars traveled to Second Baptist to face a tough opponent.  After beating Second Baptist last year, we knew they were hungry for a rematch.  We fell apart in the first period falling behind by the score of 20-3.  After that, we fought back during the next 3 periods, but were outscored 25 to 26.   We lost by the final score of 28-46.  I was extremely proud of the way our girls continued to fight until the game was over.  This showed true heart and determination.

Playing one of our rivals John Cooper is always a game to get up for.  At the end of the first period, we were down 5 - 7.  Starting in the second, we began to turn the ball over.  Cooper took advantage of the turnovers and took the game from us.  The final score was 22-37, with NCS on the short end of the stick.  It would have been a closer game, but Northland had 33 turnovers and we only shot 6 for 23 from the free throw line; both of which hurt us in the end.

With a win vs. Cypress on Monday night, the Lady Cougars was poised to take the District Championship for the 4th straight year.  It was an extremely close game through 3 periods.  Northland never held more than a 5 point lead.  In the fourth and final period, our defense took over and Hannah Krob took control of the offense scoring 8 points in the fourth outscoring Cypress 12-3.  Northland won by the final score of 36-23.  Congratulations to the Lady Cougars for a 4th straight District Championship.

The 8th grade girls basketball team played with passion against Trinity Lutheran Thursday night.  Earlier in the season, Trinity beat us by 32 points.  We were on a mission, not only to close that gap, but to beat them this time.  We were confident that we were a better team and we were determined to give them a battle.  At the half we were down by only 10 points.  We continued to fight as we made several defensive adjustments.  In the fourth period, we outscored Trinity 16-8 with most of our points coming off our full court press.  Although we fell short by the score of 30-26, I have never been more proud of this team.  They played with a lot of heart and character until the final buzzer. 12-8 (5-0)

The 8th grade girls basketball team finished the season strong.  On Friday night, we defeated Sweetwater by the score of 22-2.  Our offense wasn't as strong as usual, but our defense picked up the slack.  On Saturday afternoon, we placed CCCS for the third time this season.  Although we had already wrapped up the district championship, we wanted to keep our winning streak against Cypress (our biggest rival) alive and running.  We were aiming at our 9th straight win vs. CCCS.  We jumped out to an early lead (14-7) after the first period.  After the third, they had closed the gap to 5 points, 25-20.  In the fourth, we extended the lead outscoring Cypress 9-2.  Our defense played extremely well the entire game, even though we were in foul trouble.  I couldn't be more proud of the way these girls handled themselves this year, on and off the court.  They always played with character and class.  These girls represented themselves, their families and this program with Christ-like characteristics.  They're the best. Final record 14-8, (5-0)
