The tournament continued with a hard fought game between the Northland Cougars and the Monticello Billies (short for Hillbillies). The Cougars scored first with senior, Jeff Abt bringing in senior, Michael Ellisor. Sophomore, Kyle Serres, was the starting pitcher. Serres limited the Billies to 1 run with 2 K's. Northland failed to score in the 2nd inning and Serres held the Billies to just 1 run, bringing the score to 2-1 Billies. The 3rd inning produced the same results with Serres allowing 1 run, score at the end of 3 - Billies: 3, Northland: 1. Senior Johnathan Martin started off the 4th inning for the Cougars with a triple. Serres then helped himself with an RBI single, but that was the only run the Cougars could muster in the 4th. The Billies scored 4 more in the bottom of the 4th, one being a controversial call at home. The Cougars answered in the 5th inning. Sophomore Stuart Trahan got to first, which was followed by a walk from Abt. Ethan Carnes was then hit by a pitch. This followed by another walk from Martin, which brought in junior, Dillon Hendrix who had pinch run for Trahan. With Serres at bat, Abt stole home. Serres then smashed a line drive deep into right field, which brought home Johnathan Martin and Ethan Carnes. A sharp grounder by Yerian brought Serres home. The Billies were shut down in the bottom of the 5th by pitcher, Serres. Score at the end of 5, Northland tied with the Billies at 7-7. Neither team scored in the 6th. The tie score at the end of 6 forced the game into extra innings. Northland turned on the offence in the 7th inning. The Cougars took the lead with fine base running by Serres, who stole two bases and was driven in from 3rd by junior, Brett Wyatt. A walk by the Billies' pitcher brought junior, Joe Cate home. In an early morning game on March 3rd, the Cougars faced off the St. Frederick Warriors. The first inning was an offensive struggle. To end the tournament the Cougars played against the two-time state champions Ouachita Eagles, who won it all in 2004 and 2005. The Cougars came out swinging in first. Michael Ellisor walked followed by singles from Stuart Trahan and Jeff Abt. Ethan Carnes then lofted the ball to right field for a double, bringing home Ellisor and Trahan and sending Abt to 3rd . Johnathan Martin also added 2 RBI's with a sharply hit single up the middle. In the bottom of the 1st , with fireballer, Jeff Abt on the mound the Eagles were able to score 3 runs after a controversial call by the home plate umpire and an error. The next 3 innings were uneventful and became a pitchers' dual with Abt throwing near 90 mph and Bradshaw, for the Eagles working his split finger fastball. The 4 th inning ended with a hard line drive hitting Abt in the forearm; however, this did not stop him from making the play at 1st before exiting the game. Carnes started the Cougars off with a double. A passed ball got Carnes to 3rd, and a throwing error brought him home for the only run of the inning. Alex Clem started the bottom of the 5th for the Cougars and shut them down. The 6th inning continued to be a defensive struggle with neither team scoring. In the final inning the Cougars failed to score and the Eagles gave us a brief scare with one run, but it was not enough to overcome the Cougars. Final Score: 5-4.
