Katy - The NCS Middle School Baseball team competed in the Faith West Jr. High Baseball Tournament, finishing 3rd. Each game was close and exciting. Thursday, Northland took on Baytown Christian in the last game of the evening under the lights. Each team came up with a run in the 1st inning, but both went scoreless for the next 2 innings until Sam Greer broke the tie with a RBI single down the right field line. The score remained the same until the 5th inning where Baytown scored 2 runs making the score 3-2 going into the 6th and final inning. Down to their last out, the Cougars had runners at 2nd and 3rd when Ethan Carnes ripped a triple down the left field line, putting the Cougars ahead 4-3. Carnes would then come in to score on a walk by the pitcher, extending the lead to 5-3. Trevor Winne, who pitched valiantly in relief since the 3rd inning, got himself into a jam in the bottom half of the last inning. Baytown, with one run already across to close the gap to 5-4, had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Carnes was called in for relief where he walked the 1st batter to load the bases. Carnes first pitch to his next batter was a fast ball and with the game tying run racing towards the plate, Winne was able to get the ball to Carnes covering home and apply the tag, preventing the run from scoring. Carnes then threw 6 consecutive strikes, striking out the final two Baytown hitters and sending Northland to the next round. The Cougars returned to action Saturday morning against Ft. Bend Baptist's 8th grade squad. Will Abt pitched hard for five innings, keeping the Cougars within striking distance trailing 5-3 going in to the 6th and final inning in a well played game. However, the wheels fell off in the final frame for the Coogs as they surrendered 5 runs, mostly due to errors. Northland was able to get one more run across in the 6th, but would lose 10-4. Ethan Carnes continued his hot streak, getting on base nearly every time he was up. With the loss Northland played Ft. Bend Baptist's 7th grade squad to determine 3rd place. Joel Dennison, who stopped the bleeding in the previous game by pitching the last part of the 5th inning, threw 3 great innings allowing only 1 run. Hunter Labrada would lead the Cougars with a couple of hits including a gigantic triple to the outfield fence. Robert South closed the game pitching and also had a couple big hits as the Cougars brought home the 3rd place trophy winning 6-3.
